Not that this would necessarily be a panacea to all the issues raised on both sides regarding police action, but doesn’t enhanced training for police seem to be a win-win for both the police and those demanding reform? Better training for police makes them for effective at their jobs which would result in better enforcement outcomes for the community in many cases. Police would likewise be less stressed as they are better equipped to deal with the community in a responsible manner.

There are studies that show that increased training doesn’t really help, but there are definitely models that work in other countries. I’d 100% support longer, more comprehensive training that also expanded / created roles for situations that don’t necessarily need police response.

I think part of it depends on what kind of training the police receive. The news has been talking about a ‘warrior’ training that has been going on for a while that trains police to always be ready to be attacked. That kind of enhanced training may be what some police want but won’t help the other side

Lol what? No dude - better training is what they should already be doing. Police are human - they can’t be trained on everything - hell most don’t even have a college degree. We need different public servants to respond to different situations. We don’t need police for every little thing - especially regarding homelessness and mental health. Also, police need to be held accountable for their actions. We need to end qualified immunity and redo how police are disciplined so districts don’t get free passes due to their relationship with judges and DAs. Furthermore, we need to figure out how to deal with police unions that are abusing their power when people do try to hold them accountable. Not to mention there’s a toxic culture of “brotherhood” that make punishes whistleblowers (either formally or informally) and protects those who should be in trouble. Better training only goes so far. Plus it’s another example of telling police to fix the problem with themselves and giving them free reign to do so, but not enforcing it in anyway.

The problem is the police won't admit there's a problem, and until they admit there's a problem, there's no reform solution that will work. Radical fixes are necessary, unfortunately.

This. A buddy of mine has a PhD in Criminology and we talk about this a lot. Criminology has a lot of instances of people grabbing ideas without evidence and refusing to let them go. Stop and frisk. Broken windows. Mandatory minimums. None of that stuff reduces crime. Maybe a hyper aggressive police force also isn't a good idea either, but you'll never hear the police admit it.
