Not trying to be political, but as a teacher, if you find yourself disagreeing, I’m genuinely curious as to why.

Teachers don't get the pay that they deserve. They work beyond their hours, as well as meeting the demands of SOL testing and everything else expected of them. Tax exemptions and a standard set by the government are great ideas. If left to state and local governments, nothing would change. That's what's going on now. Paraprofessionals should be treated the same way. Of course the pay wouldn't be the same, but there should be a set standard and some sort of exemption for them also. I am a para. They say we're so vital for our teachers and students, yet I have been working in this county for 26 years and earn 21K a year and new paras make almost as much. What's wrong with this picture?

As a teacher who has taught both with and without a para, trust me, you are vital. I get so annoyed hearing people degrade the job paras have. We may not have the same job, but you love the kids just as much as I do. Also, I think it’s horrible how districts will adjust pay for newbies and ignore the teachers and paras who have stuck by them through thick and thin. Maybe if they valued their current people more, they wouldn’t need to try to incentivize new people who don’t know how to do the job yet. Sorry, I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Where I work that’s Far below were starting teachers make maybe we start to need to think that the public realizes the teachers work nine months a year most places they work seven hours a day try to have a job any other place working nine months a year seven hours today and be able to survive realistic thing is we should have school year around teachers can get the average 2 to 4 week vacations that tape around and the reality is we might have an educational system that isn’t headed towards the charter school world or privatization

I believe the preparation is a vital part of teaching, at least effectively. Are doctors only doctors when they are actually with a patient? Also, I’m not a new teacher, I just have high expectations for myself and others.

I don’t think the federal government should be making rules about those decisions. The local government and districts should be making those decisions.

Then there wouldn’t be a “shortage” that’s for sure.

Pay me more or help me pay off my student loan debt- either way it’s going back to the govt in my case.

Actually, in the days when we made investments in people, paying off student debt was a common professional benefit that has gone by the wayside because some people never experienced well-supported financial aid opportunities and well-supported pubic universities. In the years since the internet. A lot of propaganda has shifted our values and beliefs. It’s truly sad.

So leave behind folks in states that already do hit this target? That is of course the big knock on most socialist type ideas, awesome if you are in the bottom 20%, terrible for the top 20% (not sure they'd notice), for the rest of us little change. Wouldn't a federal tax exemption or large deduction make more sense as a way to give all teachers a raise? All levels of government use tax policy to demonstrate their priorities, so IMO the most equitable solution is in taxation.

My mom, a retired teacher of 40 years, always referred to teaching as a calling. Church’s are tax exempt, so why not teachers.

Whenever the gov't sets a base minimum, stuff gets screwed up. The $15 minimum wage in NY has made it so businesses are giving people less hours. Sure, your base pay went up, but now your hours are cut, so are you really any further ahead? Think what a forced base pay would do to school districts around the country. There is a reason the law of supply and demand works.

like

We see the increase of class sizes in economic bad times as well. Having a minimum starting salary could do this or governments could start taxing more equitably to provide for appropriate pay. Do I think a national minimum wage would work for teachers? Probably not. However, all education budgets should reflect a salary that allows teachers to live a middle class life style should they desire that. Why else did we attend college and receive degrees? This is not a French literature of the 1700’sadegree but one that should allow for appropriate compensation in the work force. JS

We should be making 100k a year! We’re just as important as police and fire! Without teachers there would be no other careers! We deserve for our time to be VALUED!

First, I agree I couldn’t be paid enough to run into a burning building or take a bullet for a stranger. That being said, my FD nephews tell me they happily face a fire than a 185 teenagers everyday. 😂 I know teachers who wouldn’t take a bump in pay to face middle school students either...JS this argument is a bit moot.

Honestly, I make a little under that, and a third of my paycheck goes to healthcare. Not to mention the fact that we still have to pay for copays, prescriptions, and the emergency surgery my husband had 6 years ago. It makes me so sad to look at what I “earn” compared to what I actually get paid.

likehelpful

Agreed! We are state workers when they want us to be, but not when it comes to healthcare. I’d love to have our state employee’s healthcare coverage and employee cost. Getting that cost reasonable would give me more spendable income, making it feel like I got a raise!

I make 22,000 more than that. I paid off my own college debt and paid for my masters degree. I don’t think the federal government had a great track record with these kinds of regulations. So yeah, I disagree with Bernie. As someone who teaches a lot of basic economics, I can’t really support much from this candidate.

I agree!

Let’s remember that Paras and aids in the classroom make a quarter to half what a teacher makes.

I’ve never thought, “Wow, those paras have it easy.” They work just as hard as any teachers in my building.

Without getting political - you know this will never happen! Teaching is like a calling. When we signed up we agreed to a vow of poverty.

I got asked what I was thinking when I told a parent this quote: "I will not ask you to teach your kid calculus, you pay taxes to have me do that; If your kid acts like a jerk too often, I am going to call you to handle it. We both have jobs that need to be done. I insist on staying in my own lane." I told the admin, 1st the parent repeated this to you because they were happy not mad; 2nd the parent was concerned that they were not able to assist the kid in math and this is how I explained our roles to them and 3rd making teenagers not act like Assholes is not actually part of my contract, if it was I would quit because that is impossible.

The real problems in this country are based on some really stupid things that everyone agrees with. The system is rigged to keep the rich rich and the powerful powerful. Term limits, public funded campaigns. Wanna see real people with real ideas its the only way we fix things.

No, but they can cut positions in schools-whether teachers, TA's, sports, etc.

That is so true. I was an instructional assistant (para today) my first year out of college. It would not have been worth it if I had not had health insurance as a benefit. It was a good experience too. But, back then, I got paid about $500/month take home. 🤪 I had a second job and went to school part time at night for another more employable teaching field. Times were tight back then. 😊

Government intervention in the name of fairness doesn't seem to work. I think it just complicates things further. For example, our district has a teacher shortage right now. To incentivize teachers to hire on, they are providing extra stipends. People tend to work for what they are willing to work for.

like

Honestly I don’t make much less than that and it’s not like it’s a life of luxury. Both my husband and I are teachers. His income is significantly higher than mine and without that there is no way I could live middle class status.

It’s taken me 20 years and a master’s degree to make that.
