Noticing managers take credit for my research. Is this normal? One even copied my email verbatim into a new email to the partner and said this is what 'I' came up with. He did copy me on it though.

Yes, that’s how it works.

Partner: “get me an answer on xyz”
Manager: “will do”
Manager (doing what they are supposed to do, delegate): “senior, find me an answer “
Senior (doing what they are supposed to do, do): “will do”
Senior to Manager : “here is the answer “
(Manager reviews)
Manager to partner: “here is the answer “
(Partner reviews)
Partner to client: “here is the answer "

Maybe they could have used the word “we,” but they didn’t have to. The manager did come up with the answer by using his/her resources, which includes you.

The manager has now shielded you if the answer turns out to be wrong. Taking credit also means taking ownership for what could ultimately be a costly mistake.

Manager: “here is the research the Senior did”
Partner: “the fuck? Did you review?”
Manager: “I read it but the Senior came up with everything “
Partner: “well it’s wrong”
Manager “well it’s the Senior’s fault, he did the research “
Partner: “seriously?”

As long as the manager is giving you positive feedback when you do good work and tells the partner that you’re doing a great job and you are value add, you’re fine.

Sometimes its just about messaging. No one wants to say "I've not looked into but someone less qualified has!" Putting their name on it at least shows they trust you to get it right. I've had manager tell partner the research came from me, because I found an answer that was not what team had expected, not taking credit sounded like a disclaimer.

if you are cc'd suggests you were assisting somehow. Otherwise why are you on the chain? I don't cc staff for things they are not involved with. It's probably meant to be ambiguous

Don't judge off one email. Look for a pattern. the real bad managers will not cc you on anything. you'll usually be in the dark about status or the issue's backgroung. Then sometimes you will hear the partner or SM keep asking them about it and they can't answer, they will say they need to look into it, and they will come running to you! 😂

If I see pattern of being cut out of the communication I'll try cc'ing others when I send across my work. Either way, truth comes out eventually

The good managers know the more credit they push and blame they take the better it looks. It shows they are both being efficient and developing people. And the best ones do it all themselves and still say it was the team! 😂

Always use the word “We”. I always point out who helped me with finding the answer. Also, sometimes you are reiterating things that the higher ups know. We need to use the word “we” a lot more in our industry in general. Almost everything is a team effort.

Manager should use “we” - don’t go crazy about it though - if you’re doing good work you’ll eventually get noticed

Realize that you are part of a team. Stop griping about who gets credit for what. Your value to your team will lead to promotion. When you get there, you can be better than your managers are now. We’ve all been there :)

This is about client relationships, and it’s not personal. You’re part of the game; so, let it be played

Your job is to make the manager look good. If the manager is not a total a-hole this should be reflected in your rating

Wowzers... I type emails blindly in between the 1k tasks I have assigned to me that are due to executives yesterday. I apologize for every I that should have been a we...

With all the pressures in PA, it's a trip that we and I are dividing words that people actually focus on.

Is anyone here a SWE who started from scratch? No education or background in tech or IT, was working in an unrelated area, self taught through free online resources and ended up getting a job? I failed the non technical assessment for a bootcamp and that was my shot at finally learning with a place that could help me. That really discouraged me and made me feel like I’m just not smart enough to be working in tech at all, let alone as a SWE.

I'm curious what my expectations should be for a base salary for an HR Generalist position at a plastics injection manufacturer. They are approximately 355+ employees with 4 plants. I have 3+ years experience as a recruiter, 15+ years experience has a top manager/leader, and a bachelor's degree. I haven't worked since I was laid off from my previous position in 2020. In my 5 interviews I have had so far, salary has not been mentioned once. What do you think I should expect if offered?

There’s a hotel right across the street that’s $150 per night.. it’s alright, but not as great. Hi tax 🐠,

I have a question for those who prep individual tax returns. My parents claim my grandfather as a dependent on their tax return and due to their low income, receive PTC for the premiums they pay on his insurance (not eligible for medicare). However, would it be advantageous to have him file for his own tax return (he stays with my parents and doesn't have his own proof of residency via bills). If so, can he get PTC if his income is 0?
