Novice casual trader here. Up 40% on a long term position on DIS. I’m thinking it’s at a peak with positive vaccine news and numbers on Disney plus. I think it’ll drop but the novice in me says hold it and ride the wave. Thought being after earnings season it’ll drop and buy back after it drops again. Any thoughts?

Selling and rebuying is rarely a good move. Think about whenever you sell, you trigger a taxable event. That means any gains will be taxed at capital gains if you held more than a year, or your income tax rate if less than a year. That means that the drop you are avoiding needs to be larger than that gap in order for it to be worth it. Thats rarely the case, unless you are trading options. Disney is a solid company, honestly, I don't see them dropping in the long term, so I wouldn't sell unless you think you can use that money for a better investment/trade opportunity within your target horizon.

Question on the capital gains comment, if you were to exit with a gain, enter back in and exit again within the year with a loss, would the loss offset the gain in tax terms?

Nice job on this one. I like Disney but unfortunately my position was called away last week on a covered call sale - REALLY bad timing there. I’m looking to get back in at a lower price. If I were you, I would sell 25-30% of the position now to lock in a gain. If it pulls back you can buy back in and if it goes higher you still have a meaningful position in the stock.

The comments above are helpful. I’ve been trading 12 years. You’ve called urself a trader so I’ll answer you based on trading. If ur up 40%, you sell and close the position and find the next trade. Most trades I make are 12-25% return. Then look for the next quick mover. Pretty simple don’t ever get attached to a stock. Plenty of stocks in the sea. Good luck. Pm for more trading Details or commentary happy to help

I have scans that I’ve built based on suggestions. I subscribe to the person who taught me how to built them and I get watchlists with technical annotations every week and the setups are spot on for the most part. Those I’d say are my go to.

Agree with PM above - you can get burned easily trying to time peaks and valleys. If you are worried about it going down in the future, buy puts as a hedge and then when it drops, you can cash in the puts and DCA

Why don't you just take a portion off the table and move your gain into another position of another company? This way you have the best of both worlds.
