I used to work at a posthouse that cut Pepsi. When the client came in (actual Pepsi client, not the agency) we would have to empty the entire kitchen of all non Pepsi drinks, hide them all in the stairwell, and also always remember to comb the entire office and make sure there were no Poland springs water bottles laying around.

I used to work on Pepsi. I preferred Coke. So I would draw a Pepsi label (badly to make a point) and tape it around my Coke can.

I drew the line at the mini bar and said no.

I’m 💯 against this in its extreme. On set / in the ice chests? Sure. Crafty, ya, if they can or at least have the usual suspects from the brand front and center. They are bankrolling the job, that’s fair and easy. But exclusively? And Inside a separate business, (a vendor that serves tons of brands) and to the EXTREME…. a minibar? Get out of here. Corporate pandering taken way too far. Nope! Beverage company executives can’t be that sensitive and aloof that thier brand is the only one in existence. It must be painfully obvious to them when this is done and if it were me it would embarrass the hell out of me if I was a client. Does everybody at Pepsi only drink Pepsi products? Come on. Maybe people just don’t like your beverage. Maybe some hotels don’t carry your beverage. There may be very real reasons for it - it’s better for everybody (particularly in advertising & marketing) to experience the world as it is vs. a fake reality. Better insights. It’s like the time I was shooting a car brand in a major US city and the clients observed thier particualr brand of premium SUV seemed to be the car dejour of Uber & Lyft drivers. We were shooting real aspirational stuff. Nice budgets. Constantly getting picked up from restaurants in clapped out versions of that vehicle with seat covers and 50 air fresheners hanging from the rear view mirror….. I used to work in an agency that had a particular shoe brand client. Every time the client came in there would be tons of emails about how we need to avoid all other brands of shoes and particularly X brand. Even if we didn’t work on the brand. Haha, ya, no thanks!

I once freelanced on an Intel project and was told I needed to use a PC, which was problematic as I was a Mac guy. Asking around, I discovered that nearly everyone on the project kept an old dummy PC on their desk and fired up whenever the client was around. The Macs would be put away for the short time...and no work got done until the client left.

Been there. :)

Ha. Old news. I saw them requiring this back in ‘03.

Fellow consultants, I’m struggling and I know complaining about this will only make me look weak but I need to vent. I’ve been working upwards of 60 hours a week since January and I’m tired. If I was doing meaningful work, it would be one thing but most of my days are spent supporting my client with fire drills that end up not mattering. He’s very reactionary and trying to guide him to hold off or think of other approaches doesn’t work. (Cont).
