Now that vaccines are coming out, what are your perspectives on booking international travel for later in 2021? I want to take some time off in July but booking anything, even with insurance/flexible cancellation, still feels like such a gamble right now.

I’m not optimistic with the new strains of covid out there, like the highly contagious one in the UK that accounts for 60% of new covid diagnoses in London and the surrounding area. This new strain is expected to dominate the US by March, according to current models.

We are trying to vaccinate the world against the current, dominant strain of the virus and companies will need to pivot and make vaccines for the new strains and repeat the process as needed.

like

All reporting about the new strains have caveats that say there is a lot unknown still, and the UK version of the strain isn’t the only one circulating. There are 2 others - one from Brazil and the other from South Africa - that researchers are still trying to learn more about.

I think we are looking at ‘22 for travel normalization, unfortunately, for all the reasons listed by Deloitte1. And, having worked with a major air carrier recently... that’s what they are thinking too.

Tentatively accepted a wedding invitation in Nov but won’t even be thinking about booking travel for months, and if we do it would be insured

I just came back from a cross country trip, no issues at all with traveling domestically. Maybe try sticking with that? The US has an incredibly varied landscape, I’m sure you could find something that appeals to you.

like

Given COVID rates in the US, going abroad seems way safer than visiting some states 😂

like

I’d wait. It’s not a real vacation if you can’t relax without being on high alert for new Covid strains, restrictions in other countries, mask wearing all day. Save your $, stay local, and do it up big once you can really enjoy it

like

Just go for it and make sure you plan well for the outbound and return test.
And still wear a mask and social distance while abroad!
Where are you looking to go?

like

True @ P1. Or Australia. Or most of Asia.

Def buy cancel for any reason travel insurance! Coverage for a $2-4k trip should be about $300.

like

I’d wait until it’s safe for the world at large.

Some may say it’s your prerogative but that’s not true during a pandemic.

It’s not just you when you gamble when people are the chips.

like

The vaccine itself is a gamble.

Hi all, how did you solve the retirement puzzle?

As an expat, I went on the Degiro for investing at the moment, since the account can be used from all countries.

Was considering to invest also in an insurance, but is apparently not possible if you live abroad and then maybe go back to the home country.

I feel like I’m in between a rock and a hard place. I absolutely hate the account that I’m working on. While I am actively looking for work elsewhere, I am reaching to a point where I just want to walk away for the sake of my sanity and overall mental health. The longer I stay on this particular account the more incompetent I feel about my own ability to complete the tasks asked of me. This account is mentally and emotionally draining and I am picking myself apart to a point...

How do people deal with manipulative/controlling in laws? I truly love my wife and we always thought our relationship with her parents would change after marriage and now 4 years later with a kid on the way, it hasn’t. They feel the need to make passive/aggressive comments that they basically think I’m a slave driver for insisting that she has her own career and keep working. They legitimately cannot believe she wants to be more than a stay at home mom. Frustrated to the point of depression.
