Now with a plan for things getting back to normal it would be a good time to address an elephant in the BigLaw Bowl. Who here has been laid off due to Covid or just during Covid? I admit I have.

Also wanted to take this time to ask how everyone in this boat is doing mental health wise. You guys doing ok? Have enough warning about it all to save up? How is everyone feeling about prospects? Was it a silent layoff of was it announced? Do you know any colleagues who this happened to as well? Just give a shout out if you want without saying anything more.

like

Mine was out of nowhere. I've been interviewing and just taking things day by day. My layoff was done with several other positions it was a group layoff. As far as mental state goes some days I'm depressed and the thoughts of where do I go from here if I can't find work plague me. Other days I embrace the flexibility I have and will likely never have in the future. I get the luxury to make my day as I please (wake up and do a yoga/excerise class, catch up with friends, do pro bono work, apply to jobs/talk to recruiters, read, play video games, organize files and forms for future role, etc.).

like

I think that's pretty hard that you had a group layoff like that without any notice, but it is also great to hear you are taking a few moments for yourself. At least you can take solace in the fact that it was not a you personality thing. Now is such a great time to really take a look at priorities in life and to re-center on things that are important.

My great hope is that coming out of this all of us falling on tough times will be the kinds of change we want to see in the legal marketplace as things rebuild themselves. Maybe it's a pipe dream since a lot of the most frantic are still working, but I'd like to think we are on the verge of some great positive changes.

Was a two or three month runway given, or was the lay-off immediate as of the next pay period?

Thank you! Best of luck to you too!

Me. I was verbally told I was being hired back as an associate after articling (CAD internship you have to complete in order to be licensed) and then was told I wasn’t. Was pretty pissed off, was told a month before my last day. Prospects are pretty slim in my position too. My days are up and down. If covid wasn’t happening I probably would have taken this as an opportunity to travel.

First year associates and other Junior associates laid off after PPP expiration. Also rescinded offers from incoming first years.

Hey man, I was in the same boat (also 30 here). Start building a few new bridges. Get involved in local bar association work, and maybe some local cultural bar groups. Trust me when I say it helps! Be kind to yourself first, you'll be ok.

like

Haven't been laid off, but I just graduated and accepted a position. The start date was pushed back until January. I'm going to have to leave nyc until then because savings won't last that long. I'm just praying the offer doesn't get rescinded after all this.

@A2, international and transactional tax. I feel like tax has some downside protection but who knows.

Anyone have a sense of why Deloitte got hit so hard by layoffs? I’ve heard four potential reasons:
1. Client mix / type of work
2. Leverage
3. Over hired in anticipation of growth
4. Partners didn’t want to take a haircut

Just curious! From an external perspective, seems like they cut way more than the other firms.

What do I do? I called in sick on Monday because of a flu that turned out to be COVID. I am a manager in the logistics department, where I shouldn't come into the office to avoid risking anyone's health. However, I've been away for 3 days now and my superior is calling me in to work, even if I'm not totally healed. Considering I work alongside the drivers and they have to meet our clients, I wouldn't want to be the patient zero in the office.

Unpopular opinion - Getting fired/let go is a great thing since it will teach you to be more prepared in the future, your job is never 100% safe, you get reminded you are an employee so no need to overwork, you get to find a better job, once you get back on your feet you won’t fear getting fired/let go anymore since you’ve already went through it and found another job!

I’ve been on the bench with J1 for about 3 months. I was worried that because I couldn’t find another project, I would get laid off so I found J2, which pays more, is very meeting heavy, but I really like. I’ve kept J1 because I’m still on the bench doing absolutely nothing and getting paid. Thinking about looking for a role on a project with J1 that’s not along my career path but will allow for me to do work with no calls so that I can manage both jobs. Does anyone have experience or advice?

Looking for actionable tips to improve efficiency. I’m a senior associate doing primarily employment litigation. I get great reviews on my work product, including my writing, but lately I’ve been getting feedback that I’m spending too long on tasks and partners are having to write off too much time (not good for partnership prospects). In particular, writing briefs, emails, and letters takes me forever, probably because it takes me a long time to form the right sentences. [Cont’d below]

Hey anyone in Charlotte?

Has anyone done earthquake retrofitting for a house NEWER than 1980? I know it’s a must-do for houses OLDER than 1980. But my house was built in 1988, so it’s not required.

Several contractors provided estimates, in the $40k-$50k range, which seems like a lot of $$$.

Apparently our house has bolts but not enough and not the right kind, plus it needs joist blocking and shear paneling. All to meet codes put in place after our house was built.

Just curious if others have done this.
