OP, I lived in HK for 4 years and I can attest to that. You can get a very nice tailor made suit for $400 - 500. If you get more suits, you can negotiate a pretty good discount.

Generally you can use the fact it’s a competitive market to your advantage. But fly in, get measured, do the tourist thing and then go back for the final fitting and then back home you go. Fun trip. :)

Apparently Shanghai is competitive in quality to Hong Kong and much less expensive. I just got 3 suit jackets and 10 shirts made.
Bang Kok is world renowned as well, if not the numero uno.
