Ya, mck is trying to stand up a practice so what tends to happen is they will have aggressive staffing goals and will hire under qualified people to hit growth numbers. Then over a couple years they will work on hiring stronger people. As the stronger team moves in they will push out the first round of weak hires. The weak hires will then try to jump to other firms. It’s a common dynamic. Haven’t heard of any movement in this direction with Bain. BCG has Digital Ventures, a small pretty unknown practice but qualified people.

Ya, I think it will be tough selling the work in the right way that creates proper expectations with other mck people and clients. 6 years in and its still an issue with DD. Will also be a challenge finding quality people who know how to draw the line with out being combative. You are going to want to make sure that the people in your group can satisfy 2 stakeholders with out losing their integrity and just taking orders. If I were building you group I would not hire anyone into design leadership positions who don’t have experience with this type of consulting environment. Just because the dynamics are pretty unique .

I'm in a studio, hiring has a pretty high bar. Most studio projects are shorter term (3-6 mo) app/web design and dev projects. Studio staff mostly works with the project team in office instead of traveling to the client site every week (travel is more like under 2x mo.) Great people, environment, and work/life balance if you can get in.

How does Deloitte Digital compare to fjord and McKinsey Digital and ibm design?

like

McKinsey Digital is def the new kid on the block so I wouldn’t plan on their practice being very mature yet. IBM digital isn’t very well known. I would say DD and Accenture are the big contenders in this space. We have had our digital practice longer but they are bigger via acquisitions. I would say the output is pretty similar but the cultures are different.

The reality is that most people won’t connect those dots so I highly doubt it will ever impact your future .

What are you trying to do with us? Studio or consulting? I suspect somewhere around 95-110k

If you only have 3 years of total work experience and I was doing the interview I would bring you in as a high associate maybe low staff. You would be in the 85-95k range. I will say though that some studios have a much lower bar for entry than others. I have heard that NYC is one of those studios for what it’s worth.

Here is the run down: DD studios: highest bar for entry, highly skilled people. Of the studios NYC has the lowest bar. Doblin UX: unknown Deloitte Digital non studio / federal: Easier to get into and generally average skilled people. Deloitte proper: total crap shoot but the lowest bar for entry.

@DD2 lol with these observations. Which group are you in?

I would second that 3 years exp would be unlikely to come in to a studio at senior. I believe senior ux starting band goes up to 115k.

CX, my comment above was strictly speaking to Design capability.

Yea Op you would come in consultant level in studio or consulting

Interesting. Do you guys know what the pay ranges are for consultants and senior consultants? Also, what’s your POV on these studios within consultancies? How do they differ from each other? Trying to understand the landscape and you 🐠 are knowledgeable...

When I say consultants I just mean the level- like junior vs senior. I’m not from NA so the terminologies may differ- apologies in advance.

I don't really know what all the pay bands are but when I came on I was able to find some pay ranges through recruiter postings and matching them to job descriptions on the D website.

I suspect it’s slightly lower than consulting because there is no expectation of travel, but I’m sure we pay up for good talent

It’s interesting cus McK has been the quiet one making tons of new hires. What’s Bain and BCG doing w design? Have you heard of anything?

Always be weary of expansion stage hires, quality drops to increase speed

@DD2 is dropping some good facts. I’m on the consulting side so less aware of the studio dynamics and what not. Great people to work with. We win work over McK digital and the MBBs both for digital strategy and implementation which they are all slowly getting in. Agree that DD and Accenture are similar minus the culture

I suspect that the MBB digital practices will mature and become competitive but will have to lower their rates to still sell work
