Obligatory fear post about getting iced out. I billed a huge amount of hours for the first 5-6 months of the year, to the point that to hit my hours this year, I only need to bill 100 hours each month for the rest of the year. That being said, I have been so slow. I won’t even bill 80 hours this month. I’ve been asking for work (though I could definitely be more aggressive). Other people in my group seem busy unless they are lying. I work in mid market investment fund formation. A bit scared.

Chill. All you people freaking out about the things outside of your control are in for a rough life. Control what you can, sleep easy on the rest.

funny

We hired four additional people over the course of the craziness and now it seems like there are too many attorneys and not enough work to go around

Be more aggressive. You won’t get fired for trying to get work. And ask if there are non billable things you can do to help.

like

send emails and ask for work or how you can help. document it. then relax.

I’m burned out, so i slowed way down this month. I also hope that won’t effect my position

They are probably spreading the work around to the other associates in your group who were slower earlier in the year and need to bill a lot to hit hours over the remainder of the year.

This is how a healthy functioning practice group is supposed to work. You should actually consider yourself lucky.

like

If that’s the case I would be grateful and probably found the unicorn of big law jobs!

You’ll be fine, but get aggressive now if you are worried about hitting a billable requirement. You will be 5x stressed if you’re in the same situation in December while trying to juggle any family/holiday expectations. Get out in front of this and ask for work so you can be busy in October and November. Then relax.

What's the best way to ask for a pay raise?

When I was headhunted for the job, ESG was a relatively new concept and too few companies hire for related positions. I didn't find any salary range from Glassdoor or anywhere so I had no idea. My fault was I did not ask the HR and just gave my asking salary. When I saw a similar post from my company (I was already hired that time), they were already including the pay range and I realized mine was way below. I'm already 2.8 yrs in the role.

My recruiter told me I️ would be hired as an FTE after 3 months now they keep extending me month by month & the instability of not having health benefits makes me feel extremely anxious. I️ initially wasn’t interested in contract jobs but thought it would be a good opportunity for my career. Im thinking of sticking around but also debating looking for a new opportunity w/ more stability/clarity. Any advice?
