Obviously leaving for client side pays well, but sticking with agencies, how does one make a BUNCH of money in this industry? (Short of "get an MBA and become a CEO")

I actually feel like it's a misconception you make more on the client side... I think it starts that way at lower levels but my impression is that it tips in favor of agency side one you reach director levels. Naturally depends on size of client, role etc. but I've had two client opps come my way and was not impressed by the base pay for either (though presumably work life balance would've improved). Any others have thoughts on this?

I made 18k in referral fees (recruitment) at one agency over 14 months.

A- being smart with the money you do make, save and invest in real estate to create an alternative income source. B - become CEO C - do not get an MBA if you are staying agency side, we don't pay more for it.

like

Start a small agency and get acquired by Omnicom/Publicis/WPP/Inter or one of their subsidiaries--actually add Deloitte, Accenture, InfoSys and the consultancies grabbing in our space.

I got more for my MBA...

Agree with DigitasLBi...agency side pays comparable to client side, but at the middle levels. Lower levels client wins. Higher agency. Plus the benefits, support and work environment on agency side are WAAAAAY better. I was at Client with advanced degree...went to agency and get paid far better with much more help and better overall benefits package. This is pharma btw.

SVPs and above made a decent amount especially if you're one of the lucky few to work with an agency that still honors a bonus structure for execs.

Try being smart and providing value and being good at what you do, it does actually work. You will never make money in anything if incapable of finding any other motivator besides that

like

Only way to make real money is to start an agency, get acquired. Everyone else is just paying their mortgage.

like

Agree with @digitas here. Client side pays way more for entry level/jr roles, but once you're director level +, agency is where it's at for both money and culture. Speaking from personal experience working both.

I’m new to consulting. Spent my entire career in industry where I worked on a closely knit team. My work style is to befriend my coworkers not only because I like to work with my friends, but also so I don’t feel bad when I call them on their sh** for not pulling their weight. I am the fulcrum and counterweight combined. I now find myself being taken advantage of and am too uncomfortable to confront slackers on an 18mo project. How do I find balance?
