Offered the option to go MacBook Pro, but am deeply ingrained in excel on windows (alt keys, right click key, etc). Tempted to get it as they’re much more premium than most windows laptops I’ve seen, but scared it’ll slow me down. Anyone done it and have any advice?

I have a personal MacBook and professional window computer, but have to do excel work on both. You can get used to it, but it feels completely different on Mac. I haven’t thought of using a separate keyboard like SC1 suggested, good idea.

I knew a person who did a Mac book pro with an extra external windows wireless keyboard and the shortcuts stayed the same

likesmart

I don’t see how the shortcuts stay the same as mac’s excel software is not the exact same as the excel software for windows. The shortcuts themselves are not available in the software and its not the keyboard that’s the issue but I may be misguided or out of date as I last attempted the switch a few years ago.

like

You can run Windows in Parallels and still use macOS for other stuff. Having said that, the Windows notebook will probably be the easiest to get accustomed to and you keep your precious shortcuts. Mac shortcuts and the command buttons just confuse me to no end.

like

Think it just depends on the internal hardware. If they using the new ones, definitely go for it. The shortcuts are a very small deterrent, learnable in a week or two

likefunny

They don’t feel overpowered. They feel ill designed for office work.

Using a Mac in an excel intensive role is nothing but vanity. Considering how we rarely push the limits of a pc’s hardware, a Mac’s faster hardware wouldn’t be the bottleneck. The only way the hardware is the bottleneck is if you’re not using the excel shortcuts to begin with. Unless you’re rendering 3d animations or something, I can’t see a Mac helping

And I say this as a Mac user for personal computing

Typically Windows laptops are the gold standard for business machines, except for creative roles. If you have the option of keeping a personal laptop, do that and choose the swanky model you prefer (to be blunt: as a Principal you probably make enough to afford a personal MacBook), while keeping a Windows as your work device. I love MacBooks and think that as a personal laptop they are great, but for work I love that my Lenovo is sturdy as hell and integrates perfectly with Office. I don’t really care for looks in a work computer (but Lenovo’s X series is pretty sleek ngl).

I literally got a Mac from a new job today, explored what Excel was like on here and I feel like a very old person learning new fangled technology

likesmart

If you are hard core Excel I would be careful about moving to a Mac. I find that some functionality is less robust in the Mac version (ex pivot tables) so I’m always using my work laptop for Excel even for personal stuff.

Personally, I prefer a PC running Linux, but a Mac isn't bad. However, if you spend most of your days working in Excel, Windows is the better OS for that.

Thanks all, super helpful 👌

Left consulting for a startup that only had MacBooks. Persevered for about 9 months and then made them buy me a PC. I was soon followed by other heavy excel users there (eg Finance) Excel is designed for Windows. If you are using Excel regularly, and for 'proper' Excel task, not just 1 sheet calculators, get a PC. Aside from the shortcuts, many of which don't exist at all: No advanced features of excel (powerquery, powerpivot etc) Excel for Mac can only use 1 core, if your computer has >1. PCs can use all the cores, so faster for big models

I’m curious of everyone’s views on job hopping. I’m on my 3rd job and have ~3 years of sales experience. Each job change has been an increase in comp and has shown clear career progression. At this point I’m working for a well known public company in SaaS, in their SMB segment, which has been great. But I’ve been approached by a smaller startup offering to double my base salary, 2.25x my OTE, and equity for an enterprise rep position. This is very enticing, but would I look like a job hopper?

I have a masters degree in data science and 4 years of working experience. Does it make sense for me to look around even after I asked for a raise?
