The subsidies are drastically distorting the free market. Some things should be cheaper, some should be more expensive, and some wouldn’t be produced at all.
Agree with C1, for a country that espouses the free market and its principles, the US is extremely hypocritical when it comes to agricultural subsidies
It's sold to the Asian countries
Setting aside your Real Americans (tm) trope, if their work is so valuable then why doesn’t the free market compensate them accordingly?
That implies that people are poor only because of their own actions, which in some cases is true, but for the overwhelming majority is not. And same goes for rich people. You're advocating for what will basically develop into a classist system. History has shown us what an absolutely horrible idea that is.
They do grow the food though
Maybe true, but it doesn't really address what I was trying to highlight: what would realistically happen in the alternative where subsidies aren't provided
Really wish anyone in congress actually stood for free market principles
It's even worse when we subsidize other countries. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2014/10/12/why-the-deal-to-pay-brazil-300-million-just-to-keep-u-s-cotton-subsidies-is-bad-for-the-wto-poor-countries-and-u-s-taxpayers/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.358299516ffd
The subsidies are pennies to the farmers compared risk and dollars invested. My guess is that those who have commented negatively in this topic have never gotten their hands dirty to make a living. Get a grasp and realize the farmers blue collar workers do the real work for this country and our fabricated careers in PA largely make no difference to most of the country on a day to day basis.
I take the post as more about government redistributing wealth than who actually works.
As many politicians point out, if you're a farmer, you're rich. So it's bailouts to the wealthy, handouts are only to the poor.

Having grown up in farm country I've seen some pretty awesome abuses of these govt programs. One farmer near us used funds from PIK (payment on kind) where they paid him to not grow crops to convert some of the acreage to a private golf course and softball fields. Private meaning family and friends only. When they stopped paying him about 8 years later he plowed and planted it again.
A bunch of food that gets thrown out from corporatish owned farms...

I’m speaking in regards to family farmers large and small, not the large corporations
Family farmers can be fairly wealthy and make a pretty decent penny. The people who benefit from subsidies are decidedly not the blue collar workers of small farms but the wealthy farm owners who export food.
If you don’t like it you should at least blame the right people. That would be democratic hero FDR and the New Deal. Ever since it’s been like NYC and rent control. Nobody can find enough votes to repeal.
