Listen: other races have been doing this since forever. Idc if you are scared when you see me or my neighborhood. Be ignorant and closed minded. Long as you don't affect my coin or me moving forward, I really don't care. There's not a single thing we as black people can do to make people feel more comfortable. I'm not changing how I walk/talk/etc to make you feel safer. If you feel unsafe do what makes you feel safe. I couldn't care less.
Maybe I am a bit of a pessimist, however the reality i see is that there isn’t a racial group in America that does not harbor prejudice against Black ppl.
I know some of the uppidy black ppl in there sorts of forums, who are black but yearn for being accepted by Whites, Asians and Latinos don’t want to believe it, but WE need to stop giving these people access to OUR circles and OUR culture. The most exported culture in the world is BLACK AMERICAN culture. These Asian dances and latino rappers all want to profiteer from black culture, while at the same time demonizing black skin. Just like Trump said “America First” while actually meaning “Whites First,” we need to remain steadfast in our good brother Malcolm’s mission “Blacks First”
@C3 — to your point, I’ve done a lot of reading about sociology, immigration, and cultural assimilation. I think that the racial animus we experience from other ethnic groups lies at the intersection of these ethnic groups trying to culturally assimilate (ie - “become vvhite” or strive toward vvhiteness) and engaging in the tenets of whiteness. One of which is having certain problematic attitudes and thoughts about the black community (which are oftentimes grossly exaggerated by the media), all the while denying the immigrants status as fully American. You typically hear this when vvhite folks demand that POCs “speak English” if they’re going to live in America. I believe this is called the “middleman theory”. I think all ethnic groups (black folks included) strive for this “cultural vvhiteness” b/c of what it represents — power (albeit a morally corrupt form of it), upward mobility, and an opportunity to (kinda) skate through life w/ minimal problems and have it all work out.
But I also think that this is a larger issue w/ living in a capitalistic society where dollars and increased profit margins are deemed as more valuable than basic human decency and humanity. We’re all fighting for the same resources and when that happens we’re more prone to self-segregate along ethnic lines b/c racial stratification is kinda what the USA was founded on, right? So while, it’s intolerable, it does make a lot of sense. That doesn’t mean we should tolerate it.
This is just my $0.02 tho... 🤷🏾♂️
After getting over my initial shock, and looking past the racist undertones. I honestly wasn’t not aware of attacks on the Asian community was (allegedly) being committed by predominantly African Americans. I plan to read more on it cuz as a black man from the south I wasn’t aware of the friction between the black and Asian community.
There’s a historical precedent that sets the tone for blk-azn race relations, and much of it took place in the NorthEast (NYC/NJ/MA/etc.) and the West Coast (LA/Seattle/etc.). Just to name a few examples — Azns opening businesses in blk neighborhoods, Latasha Harlins/Soon Ja Du (and the following LA Riots), Akai Gurley/Peter Liang, etc.
There’s most certainly prejudice on both sides of the fence. Make no mistake about it. I think a lot of it lies at the intersection of the “model minority” myth, blk-azn cultural disconnect when interacting (and perception of disrespect on blk folks part), etc.
There are activists on both sides trying to combat prejudice on both sides. But yeah, the sentiment doesn’t exist in a vacuum and the whole COVID thing poured kerosene on the embers of prejudice and racism in this country towards azn and black folks. We’re fighting each other not realizing that the previous presidents administration were really the ones who set these issue off initially.

since the original posters are aware of this convo, I’m not going to join and post there but just saying,
isnt assuming everyone of a certain appearance is a threat the motivation behind the attacks?
Can we really fault them though? If i heard that a dangerous person wearing black pants was attacking people, I'd sure as hell be weary of every single person wearing black pants...
It's only natural to associate things in groups to be able to process massive amounts of information. The problem comes in when social constructs like race become the basis for the grouping.
D1 makes a great point; I'd recommend folks read the thread vs. react to OP's post at face value.
Because many of the recent high profile coverage attacks on Asians had black perpetrators (the Thai grandpa who got fatally pushed, etc). I would hope they don’t generalize the entire black community though...
like what D2 commented above - minorities shouldn’t be fighting against each other. This is accomplishing nothing 😕

Yeah WTF?
So I'm assuming this is more prevelant on the east and west coast . I live in Texas and didn't even realize this was a thing. I have a PPED who's Asian on my new engagement. I wonder if he feels similar sentiments

This is me. I can’t relate to or even FATHOM
this but it is a very real problem on the coasts. At the same time, I recall being on a project and walking down a hallway and an Asian woman literally diving into the wall to avoid me. These sentiments weren’t spurred by recent attacks just reinforced - anti-Blackness is a centuries long problem in a variety of Asian communities.

Here’s what confuses me - Trump’s words that Asians caused COVID were incendiary. Why are low income Black people listening to Trump and attacking Asians?
Rising Star
Who told you that was happening?
I haven’t been following this story, are black people committing acts of violence against Asians?
It’s hard to hear but it is true, not because we don’t like Asians it’s just our community cross over a lot in marginalized communities.
That’s like me saying I’m scared to go into a Chinese restaurant bc I might get COVID (I don’t believe this bc I know Chinese does not equal COVID just like Black neighborhood does not equal violent/unsafe). That post is ignorant af but nothing new. OP from the thread needs to check those biases ASAP.
