No, we don’t realistically think they will, even though we expect them to. You can lead horses to water but you can’t hold their heads under it....uh, or something like that. In the classroom my completion rate hovers in the 75% range, even when I see them daily. Nope, based on what I’ve seen in the last two weeks, my optimism is not going to translate into tangible results across the board. On the other hand, the 20-30% who do the work, even out of boredom, make it worth our effort. Those student relationships will remain strong and continue to emphasize the impact we make in their young lives. Remember that while we think in terms of classes, groups of 20+, while touch lives one at a time.
Yes, I actually do. What we hopefully are about to experience is a return to accountability if administrators will get the F out of the way.
I'm optimistic in my thoughts about a return to using Occam's razor. Parents will be left with no one to blame but the student and themselves.
We can honestly provide many opportunities as we always have, for the student to succeed; all digitally documented. Now its up to the parent to try to motivate the student.
My district is still feeding the kids, passed out thousands of laptops and gotten cable providers to take care of access.
Now what is the excuse?
This is predicated on teachers actually working just as hard as before, which I am happy to do. We have Nerfed education so nobody fails, maybe the pendulum can swing back with this.
Fingers crossed.
Yet during school it expected that we make it all happen
It is too much yet it is expected from teachers all the time.
I found it on social media. I just hope that as teachers we are valued more and people understand what we provide
I think the parents that are concern with their child’s education will make sure their kids get their work done. So far all my concerned parents have been on top of it. As far as the others, probably not
it's like we're darned if we do and darned if we don't. we are the perpetual scapegoats so parents aren't held accountable
So many of my students don't have access to tech or the incentive to do any work while the schools are closed. Why do I say that? If I assign homework, even if it's to finish what we started in class, maybe, MAYBE 10 of my 100+students will actually do it. I love my kids, but I'm realistic That and I've been sick. So whatever my boss expects is unrealistic. I've been grading and preparing materials for when we go back.
My district tried to give every student a Chromebook. That fell on it's face. Some parents refused to do the form to get one saying they weren't going to be responsible for it lest something should happen to it. Other kids just said they "lost" thier, one high schooler broke his within an hour. I'd say less than 60% of students in my school got one. That's not all the district's fault. Those did have them, by my own observations, used it for non-academics; YouTube (the district didn't block it, some teachers said they use it to show videos, valid point), Spotify, Facebook, etc. Very few used them appropriately. If I blocked a site, trust me they found a way around me. Insisting kids get them and true 100% compliance is a fantasy. You can't force someone to take what they don't want.
I’m not sure if they will get it done or not. I do believe if we incorporate their home life into the assignment they might be more likely to do some or more of the work. I know I only teach Art but I’m having my first assignment a choice. Build an artistic Fort, make a cake or art journaling they have to take pictures of the process.... I have seen where there are math teachers having students do similar activities and taking pictures. I’ve seen where science teachers are too because what everyone teaches relates to life skills and can be done or may already be something they are doing at home and can now get a grade for🤷♀️
I know❤️ many do not see it that way or do not always count our opinions. I know there are easier ways to make these assignments happen we just gotta think like an Art teacher😘
We can’t grade or count anything, and are instructed to remind students that it is all enrichment... so I have had 1 student respond out of 87
I believe it is like anything else and is a matter of expectations. I expect my students to do my work. Just as I did when we met face-to-face. When they don't complete an assignment they and their parents receive an email or phone call. It only takes once in most cases.
I’m getting between 20 & 60% participation, depending on my class. My “A” students are working consistently my others are hit and miss.
I honestly don’t mind or care whether they do it or not right now.
1. It’s stressful for many families, including our own.
2. I get paid as long as I keep doing my job. That means I create solid online lessons and activities.
3. Those who do their work will not fall as far behind if they don’t.
I will say... I might have a handful of students not doing my work... and I have about 175 students.... so I’d say that’s pretty good!
Well I will say that for the most part my students are doing the work... and parents are making them... mainly because they don’t want them sitting around all day. So they do it... but if you overwhelm them... by giving them the same work you would have had they been in class... well that’s overwhelming for a lot of students... you have to factor in tech problems, you have to figure in the fact that you are not there to ask /answer questions.... everything... and if parents have to help... we’ll it’s overwhelming for them because many of them are working from home just like you are... so they can’t help like you think. My point of saying all this is, once they get overwhelmed... they shut down and don’t do the work... get it?
