I think the main reason one hasn’t been started is that most people in advertising do not plan to stay for their full career. Most of us think we’ll be gone in the next 5 years, so why go to the effort of unionizing if I won’t get to see the benefits?
Where do people go when they leave advertising? Serious question
Consulting?
Yes, but given the nature of the industry it would require the kind of cross-company uptake that is difficult to achieve. If clients can just go to a non-union shop where their demands will be met, they will.
Only the big shops are signatory to SAG, and a lot use non-union crews. If so many agencies are working around already established unions in the industry, what makes you think a brand new one will have any traction?
We are a talent based industry. Flexibility is the name of the game.
Workers of the world unite! We have nothing to lose but our chains…
Hard pass. Unions are all about job security and wage structure. There is no way in hell I’d grow in my career to be VP under 60yr old working in a union.
With all due respect, every encounter I’ve ever had with union shops reinforced the stereotype that they foster lazy workers who are dispassionate and have no craftsmanship.
I want to work with the best in the industry, not a bunch of people who are there because the agency can’t fire them.
Unions and collective bargaining made sense when people were dying at work and there was no job mobility.
They are a glass ceiling and I can do without

There’s a bowl for that.My gut tells me that there’s too much money to be made for real Union to happen. There are too many people at the a CD or CD level or strategy Director or VP/SVP account people who wouldn’t be willing to lose either their status or their pay cut in order to become part of a union. At what point do we become managers versus labor?

I would LOVE to see advertising unionize.
YES.
NO.
uhm no
Yes
“No.” - every HoldCo
I’d be down. Have a feeling that a ton of jobs would either be brought in house at clients or the opposite and outsourced to other countries, at least when it comes to media.
