Ok need some advice-I’ve been at my firm for 8 months supporting the same attorney since day 1. About 3 weeks ago a new associate started and I’m her main support also. I want to get her something for Christmas but I know very little about her lol. She’s in her late 20’s, very stylish, single. I also don’t know what a good amount to spend is. For reference we are in a suburb of Syracuse, NY, we represent school districts and my salary is $42,000/yr. Any tips would be awesome!!

Nothing expensive. That salary isn’t worth it.

Gifts shouldn't flow up the hierarchy, so I would suggest not getting them a gift at all. If that feels awkward, bring in baked goods or a card.

Th I s! Do not gift up unless it's small, like a plant.

likehelpful

I agree with what the others say. Its too soon and if anything, they should be getting you something. Also, please advocate for yourself and dont be scared for asking for more money as long as your work product is good. You are worth more and should be paid accordingly.

Nothing 💀

likesmart

Card only. You are the attorney’s gift.

Agreed and we appreciate you for that response.

She’s only been there three weeks. I think I’d wait until next year, and do not feel guilty about it!

Nothing . They should be gifting you

Considering the details you’ve provided, perhaps a bubbly, $20-40 worth.

If you feel so inclined of course. But like others have implied, in your position and considering your salary, you shouldn’t feel pressured or obligated.

I would also be interested just out of curiosity how long have you been a paralegal? I know you say you’ve been at your firm eight months, but $42,000 is more like a legal assistant salary. unless you’re a brand new paralegal, and even that might be a little too low, especially in New York or in Syracuse, which may be more of a kind of quiet sleepy city, but if I am you once I hit that one year mark I’m asking for a raise or I’m looking for something that’s going to pay me at least $5 to $10,000 more. Just my sidenote. Blessings!

I was a paralegal for 5 years, then took 2 years off and worked in healthcare (bad move lol) then went back to law this past April. I agree it’s a low salary…I’m trying to hold out until April and see if I can get a raise. I was shocked when I joined this site and saw how much others are getting paid and what their bonuses are. We do get an end of year bonus (no clue what to expect) but I’m sure it won’t be anywhere close to what are others on this site are getting.

My firm sends out a email every holiday that gift giving is not a part of the firm’s holiday tradition. Specifically stating that they don’t want us to feel like we need to get gifts for our bosses. I agree that we should not feel the need to gift up.

like

I wish mine did that! This is my first Christmas there but I’ve chatted with other paralegals and assistants and this apparently is the way it goes there. The paralegals are doing a secret Santa with each other (there’s quite a few of us over 3 offices) and we set a $25 limit and I’m excited for that part lol.

42k doesn’t sound like a livable wage, especially for this type of work, but if you’re in a good financial situation somehow, go for it.
Facemasks/skincare, fuzzy socks, baked goods are good and affordable

I disagree with others about not gifting up. Station in life has nothing to do with the spirit of giving IMO. If you want to give her a gift because it brings you joy, I say go for it. That said, since she’s so new to the firm, I’d go with something neutral but thoughtful such as a gift card to a lunch spot near the office (assuming you work at least sometimes in the office). This type of gift sends a welcoming message to someone new, which will likely make her feel included, even if she doesn’t celebrate Christmas.

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with discrimination as an Asian in the workplace? In my company it seems like it’s a white boys club where and they just promote white ppl because they’re white. And then they have a lower bar for promotions for minorities (traditional minorities likes Hispanics and African Americans). Meanwhile they make Asians do all the work. I am not generalizing that this is how it is everywhere but it definitely is that way in my workplace. Any advice?

Mechanical engineering grad, joined a medical device startup that I had done co-ops at. 8mo into full-time, pivoted from engineering into more of an operations role doing new product introduction (NPI), now with 3 direct reports.

The combination of startup+medical device+NPI seems very unique and I'm struggling to find salary comparables. Currently making 75k but it feels very low given my new responsibility and impact. Any advice?

When is the right time to ask for a raise in salary? Nearing the end of my first year at current tech startup. We don’t have a formal process to request a merit or cost of living salary increase that I know of… there’s less then 15 people in our company. I made a big no no when joining the company and did not negotiate the salary before accepting. Should I informally chat about future compensation to my boss? He’s a pretty laid back guy and I think he may be flexible with me.

Has anyone ever posted a general marketing position? We have an open position on our marketing team but we are unsure what type of position to offer. We have a wide variety of needs but don’t necessarily need to have this future person have all these skills. For example we need someone with great copywriting skills and also need someone who is great at digital marketing. This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.
