Ok, the new global infection numbers are starting to get me really worried about the coronavirus

I highly recommend you avoid ever Googling anything about mosquitoes if these numbers concern you. Coronavirus is just the media's new play toy. People are clicking, so they'll keep writing. But the numbers are small in comparison to population size. And just like the flu (also worse numbers) unless your elderly, infant, or already sick, there's very little chance of this killing you. It's not the black plague the fearmongering would have it out to be. Some people will probably get this and never even notice they have it. The bigger story here is the warning/cover-up/death that kicked the whole thing off. But no one covers actual news anymore, and China is a blackhole of information. So we won't here anymore on that topic.

Outbreak in Korea, starting japan, Iran, Italy... 14 coronavirus flown back to US in same plane as non-infected people...
Even if the health threat isn’t that high, the economic impact will be substantial.

Do you still feel this is fearmongering?

My spouse works in bioscience and he was not overly concerned until he went to a conference with infectious disease experts who were very concerned.he made me buy masks and extra food.
They are working on a vaccine (lots of folks) but who knows if or when they’ll get it. (In happier news, did you know they developed a vaccine for Zika? It’s apparently in clinical testing and works. The media loves the terror and loves to hate on pharma, so nobody shouted that from the rooftops...we just stopped seeing Zika stories.)

And I’m starting to think... has the flu ever totally overwhelmed a city’s healthcare system or ability to dispose of piling up dead bodies? Has malaria?
If the extrapolations are deaths are correct, should we be concerned with 8000-10000 deaths within weeks, in a modern city?

Now that the evidence shows in Korea and Japan, that this virus cannot be contained, what will happen in my city when it finally hits?

I’m all about not buying into the media hype but this one is starting to gnaw at the back of my mind.

I’ve been following this story closely with the intent to prove to my worried family that this is all overblown. But I’m grasping at straws trying to explain those videos.

The issue is that Wuhan & affected areas let it spread wildly and their medical infrastructure was already weak and is now completely overwhelmed with too many patients, lack of communication, and supplies running out. If one of us in the US got it, it would be not much different than treating the flu (and I mean real influenza, not a bad cold). Now, for immunocompromised and elderly/babies that’s a different story. But again, influenza and pneumonia would be similarly as bad for them to catch.

I worry more about my colleagues who I STILL don’t see wash their hands with soap, or if they do it’s for 5 seconds, than I do about catching and dying from coronavirus.

AMD1 - I hope you’re right. Japan and Korea will be the guinea pigs. If things go south there in the next few weeks then we know that it isn’t a matter of how prepared you are or “letting it spread”.

Also- I’m not sure whether it’s accurate to say that influenza and pneumonia would be similarly as bad. Flu season is a global thing- it did not and has not resulted in funeral homes in Wuhan being overrun with the dead.

Currently an SC @ D - I have an offer at 10% TC raise, but got staffed with a team and client I really like on subject matter I enjoy. Offer is with a company I liked during interviews, but have some reservations based on 1hr commute (3days/wk) and behavior I saw (I.e., pretending they didn’t know something and asking me to explain, then telling me they’re an expert and were just testing me). Do I have Stockholm syndrome for wanting to stay, or should I wait for something better?
