A friend who was weighing taking her company’s counter offer did a lot of research and found studies that said most people who take the counteroffer end up leaving within two years, often because their willingness to leave soured their relationships in the company. So I think it really depends on what your relationships are like.

like

So your current firm will pay less salary but make you an equal partner with the other attorneys? And require less billable hours and offer better benefits? If they’re offering you equity in the firm i don’t think it’s such a concern that you may have soured the relationship by accepting the other offer. Someone is giving up part of their share to get you to stay.

like

1500 hrs > 1900. No matter the pay. But I agree you will eventually end up leaving the firm if you were already looking for an out

like

Yeah that counteroffer is great - OP should stay!

I agree with the prior comment re effect on relationships. It is possible that it might work; however you could be seen as having strong armed the firm to get more money if you didn’t approach your current firm with the request for a raise before you sought out a competitor.

like

I mean doing the math, the new job is a pay cut on a per hour basis. You will be adding two more months of billable hours a year, a significant lifestyle change. So you should make sure that the new firm has the long term prospects you’re looking for. Partnership prospects at a national law firms is very vague. This firm seems motivated to keep you.

like

I’d take the fewer hours, but only if you’re committed to staying long-term. Having the National firm on your resume would be helpful for the rest of your career, even if you don’t stay there.

like

Do you have kids yet? If not, 1900 hours isn’t so bad. You’ll still work a lot, but you can do it for two years and get out.

Less hours and double the time off paid plus equity!

Struggling to evaluate an offer and would like some help. currently make ~150/8/10ish base/bonus/RSU, ~170ish all in excluding benefits. I would be transferring to a startup with a base of 180k with equity. The benefits at my current job amount to maybe a few k more than at the startup. So, overall my cash compensation amounts to roughly the same or a slight increase. The potential upside is the equity. Is that small comp increase enough to warrant leaving a big company, even with equity?

Started as a baby legal assistant about ten years ago at a transactional firm - now the majority (seven years) of my experience is in litigation. I am wanting to move more toward transactional or in-house now. Am I basically starting completely over? I am well respected and sought-out in litigation, but I'm unsure of how to market myself in the direction I want to go with as much confidence. Has anyone successfully made this move?

How many of you are the only woman at your firm/practice group? I’m at a large firm, but part of a smaller practice group (<10 associates). We have female partners, but I’m the only female associate in our group. I’ve become friends with one of the other associates. Someone recently joked that I’m his “work wife.” This really bothered me. I don’t think of our relationship as romantic at all. This is mostly just a rant, but can we please retire this term?
