Total bullshit. I’m a woman and I’ve had to let go both women and men. They always do both in a mass layoff because they don’t want to be accused of discrimination. It’s why they also try to lay off old/young, white/ethnic, etc. Firing for cause is different—if you aren’t cutting it, you’ll be out no matter what you are.

Hey SC3, I had a male creative director be a male so he couldn’t get fired (we worked in America, which has an unofficial rule about it). He would get to work every day at 11, harass some employees over lunch, and then disappear at 4.

Can we please cool it with the ‘tough shit’ rhetoric and have a normal fruitful debate on a real issue? ACD6, you sound terribly naive, Gen X and Y men were mostly born and raised feminist. They’re coming into the power age now and are suddenly being marginalized by this new breed of ultra or radical feminism. Our generation just happened to be the last where it was a 9 to 1 ratio of men to women in the creative department classrooms. This ratio has changed significantly and it’s for the better. Give this new gen time to mature and things will be much more balanced. However, until this new generation comes of proper age, wisdom and experience, forcing women early into leadership roles (for a 3% photo op) can backfire and set the movement back when they fail. (And they won’t fail because of gender, but because they were placed too soon.) We will ALL benefit from the best talent at the top, regardless of gender. The arrogance of claiming ‘the system’ and throwing around words like ‘patriarchy’ is antithetical to the original cause of equality. By vilifying White men in the press, on t-shirts and here, in social media circles, you’re marginalizing them. Those white guys you hate are not going anywhere and are secretly voting for asshats like Trump. You see, it was not HER TURN, it was the best person for the jobs turn, which was hers, and by making it a ‘no more white boy’ issue, she LOST. (That’s WHAT HAPPENED.) So until this ‘move over white men’ rhetoric stops, and the new feminist movement becomes more inclusive, (like it was for the last 3 generations,) then you are continuing to divide the country to appease your radical ideas of the system and the patriarchy. The only thing that’s stopping you from advancement and your life goals is YOU.

She's telling the truth. If not completely. Gender and other protected class identities do confer a certain degree of immunity. But if you want someone out there are ways. The least risky is to find a Headhunter you have a great relationship with and get them poached away. More risky is to manage them out by giving them shittier and shittier work to do until they quit. Straight up firing someone who talks like that is a quick path to a lawsuit or worse.

I see my suggesting we don’t bash on a whole group of people based on their gender or color has triggered a few people. Inclusion can be such a drag. ACD6 & Wunderman 1 - try reading what I wrote again, but this time, consider having a dictionary and/or thesaurus with you. Read slowly and comprehend the words. I’m seeing this more and more. Good people are being let go because they want women in lead spots and people being pushed out to accommodate women coming back from maternity. PS I’m a woman so not bashing but not so sure it’s the right strategy.
