Community building is very important. One year I used ‘blurt beans’ and it helped with most of the talkers. Basically I had a jar of kidney beans and an empty tennis ball can. On the tennis ball can, I put strips of tape at different levels with different rewards on them. The rewards were more appealing the higher up the can they were. At the start of each day, each student got 3 beans. If they blurted or talked, they had to place a bean back into the supply jar. At the end of the day, anyone who had beans left put them into the tennis ball can. When the beans met each piece of tape, they earned that reward. Good luck! PS: probably wouldn’t work for high school, but worked great with third graders!

I love the blurt beans!

Watching with interest. I have a class of 28, 8 of whom are football players. It’s deafening. I spend all my time managing them.

Try listening to the “teachers need teachers” podcast. There’s a few episodes that are dedicated just to classroom management.

I am no wonderful teacher and I am not good at my suggestion, though I am trying harder than ever this year. Build a community in your classroom where the children care about each other and about content (Responsive Classroom approach).

I have the same issue. My kids are sweet and I have changed their table and carpet spots at least a dozen times in the last 4 weeks. Add to that I have no door but 2 large openings, partition walls on 2 sides, and in our small area is 4 first grades, the sped teacher, esol, speech, ot and gifted resource (in the hallway). it gets very loud. I let my kids talk at stations if they whisper but they cannot talk if I am teaching.

Have you looked into 1-2-3 Magic. It changed my classroom. Takes about 1-2 weeks to kick in but after that issues were few and far between.

Splitting the times up. So it starts over for each subject. Also, not conversing about the issue. You let them know the expectations and when they get a 1 you state the expectation they missed without anymore input so there is no room for argument. When you get to two you just say, “2”. I actually also used it on my own kids when we would go shopping or out to eat. They very rarely got on 2 or 3 after the first few times with consistency. They are 11 and 12 now and I haven’t had to use it since they were 5.

I saw a teacher use a “yakker tracker” that was adjustable for the decibel level appropriate for different activities. It helped. They aren’t cheap, but maybe you can find something on eBay.

I use the tap lights to show what voice level they should be on. There are four levels: no talking, whisper voice, table talk voice, and speaker voice. Depending on what we’re doing the light next to the desired voice level is turned on. When the noise in the room goes beyond the desired level, I use a wireless doorbell to grab the students attention. We have a 15 second q&a to see why I rang the bell, and review the light. If I have to do this more than once while running small groups... we have to take a break from group work. It’s been working pretty well, as my class loves center time, and do not want to miss out on it. They have been able to maintain themselves.

I have 25 students, 18 boys and 7 girls, who are incredibly chatty and off-task. But I’ve decided to give WBT a try, and although it is energy-depleting, it seems to be helping, especially with a scoreboard.

I’ve been at a startup for a month now. I’m pretty certain my co-manager has been purposely withholding information from me when I ask for clarity on a process or general company information. Other than that, I like my role and company so far. What’s the best way to approach a situation like this? Pretty certain it’s because of insecurity and wanting to look better but I really am not a fan of these antics and it makes me question how long I want to stay here.
