Okay ladies, advice very much appreciated.. I just had an interview where I was basically told (yes I was told) I’ve done “too many different things, and I have no focus” well after 13 years in Marketing I’d say doing “too many different things” I always thought was an asset. I’ve been an entire marketing Dept, I’ve been in digital marketing, I’ve run social media, I’ve done UX & web design. I’ve been in-house and agency. But to say I “lack focus” because I’ve been in the industry for awhile??!

Maybe the job interviewer was narrow minded but also if you’re applying for senior roles it’s not all about what you can do it’s about how you do things to generate pipeline and revenue for a company.

I swear the the job hunting process is worse than dating sometimes. They want experience but not too much. What do you want from me?

like

Agree, they’re always looking for what you don’t have rather than what you do have. Wtf.

like

Why couldn't they just say that they're scared of successful women with big potential and can't handle being less versatile in comparison to you. Wouldn't that just be easier?

likesmart

What sh*t company is this? Probably does not want to pay you the rightful compensation for your WELLROUNDED experience

likesmart

That’s their loss, I think it’s great you have experience in many areas within Marketing. Check out the book “Range” - very compelling support for being a generalist vs specialist.

like

That's odd. I've never heard a recruiter say that before. I'd think they'd want someone with a diverse skill set.

like

I had to put a laugh emoji because if they’re head of the marketing department, are they scared you’ll want to do their job??? That’s the only way I can justify it. Some people are generalists, and that’s fine!

likefunny

It’s not a nice comment but what they probably mean is that on paper you are not specializing in one area in which you became an expert in. Jack of all trades, master of none. If there’s a specific area you are wanting to be interviewed for maybe revise your resume to heavily stressed those areas even within different positions you’ve held.

like

I understand Associate's POV. I guess on the recruiter's end it looks like you don't stay in one area long enough to have an in depth understanding, but I still get your frustration OP because everything works together.

like

Oh wow. I have done alot of different things and have never heard that. I am sorry to hear they said that.

like

I don't know what to think of job hunting at this point, honestly. We have all been told to gather as much experience as we can as it can be an edge. And then I read your post and don't know anymore. Well, I think you dodged a bullet there, OP.

smart

Wow, the only thing I can think is are they saying something negative in terms that you aren't staying in one place for long periods of time? Other than that I thought the same thing...the more skills you have the more of an asset you were to a company!

My least amount of time at one role was 6m but I was laid off - other than that I’ve never spent less than 3 years in a role (usually moving internally between marketing teams) .. honestly seemed like a weird excuse.

like

Interview for what? I was just wondering, if it's a job interview what right does the recruiter have to tell you that you don't have focus when he's just a recruiter on the first place? Such remark is very unnecessary.

There is definitely something wrong with them. They don't like a proactive employee who happens to have an initiative. Maybe they're just too scared they will be outperformed.

like

OP, I feel your pain. This is unacceptable feedback in my opinion. At least most of the time, unless you're applying for highly specialized roles that require X number of years experience doing 1 particular thing. I've been increasingly getting this feedback also. It's definitely frustrating because marketing can mean so many different things. It also doesn't matter what a job description says when you accept a position, roles evolve and responsibilities get rearranged within companies where a marketing professional may have to become more involved and learn new skills. I do think ultimately it is the recruiter/hiring manager's loss for not seeing your value and ability to be agile and dive in, not to mention the 13+ years of experience you bring to the table. I commend you for your wide skillset! It gets more challenging to find the right role the more senior you become, just have to believe the right fit is out there and that you're simply being redirected!

I’m in a similar boat as well. Except I have about 8 yrs. I haven’t stayed more than 1.5 yrs in any job and have worked for 4 different companies and freelanced a bit. The rejection hurts and I feel like I set myself up for failure due to my being curious to learn more in various industries.

So what should folks like us do? If it’s a resume play then should we remove stuff? Or is there a better interview response to “why have you hopped around so much?”

There is this big bank where I'd love to work at, and after several interviews for various positions they end up promoting someone from within, even thou I understand it and think it’s good they promote their people, it left me feeling like I'm just being used to comply with the process.

My wife wants to found a SaaS startup. She would work on product, and would need a technical co-founder to build it. I would support on the market and commercial side on a PT basis. Should I take a (small) equity position to give us a combined majority stake so that we can keep the dream alive if the third founder pulls out? Or would this be discouraging to the third founder and/or potential investors? I’m thinking 45:10:45… could I go higher?

Additional Posts in Women In Marketing

I start a new job on Monday and I’m riddled with imposter syndrome. I’m moving into an agency for my first time after years of being in-house at a very unsupportive, fast moving start up that was so focused on quick acquisition & fast growth that my skills were often pushed to the side (content, community, social media). Moving into an agency… I’m terrified that I’m not good enough & they’ll find out. Any advice for someone going into an agency for their first time would be appreciated! Xx
