Super helpful advice SED 2. I love how knowledgeable and kind the UX bowl is, we have some great people in here.
My advice... I cyber stalked your portfolio and I recommend telling more of a UX centered story when you present your projects to employers. IMO now your project stories lean heavily on content, brand and platform execution. I love your wording and I don’t think you should remove any of the things above, but I do think you should sprinkle a little more of the UX work you’d like to do in the future throughout your project stories when you speak to an employer.
For example, could any of your stories answer the following questions:
- Are there any projects that allowed you to do interesting discovery or research work? What interesting problems or insights did you uncover about the industry or product?
- What are the user’s goals when using a product? How did your design support them in accomplishing their goals?
- Was this project part of a larger iterative cycle? How would you improve upon it in a future round?
- Talk about how your documentation or meeting facilitation improved the goal or understanding of a product. You have front-end chops so you have the benefit of speaking developer. That is a strength that you understand what needs to be communicated out to others to make design a reality.
Last piece of advice, be able to give a good and bad example of UX and why it is so good or bad. Don’t say Netflix for a good example because I hear that all the time :) Bonus points for giving an example that is fantastic on mobile.
Awesome advice. Thank you!
You could try the General Assembly UX bootcamp. Or don’t talk about your experience outside of UX (hide the UI background) and get a job as a UX designer in a place that helps you grow the UX skills. Definitely try to read about UX as much as possible. Understand basics about user research, heuristic evaluations and conventional UI rules, but keep an open mind. You mentioned IDEO. They also integrate service design, so a general understanding of the ecosystems, customer journeys, front-stage vs back-stage is helpful.
Again, thank you.
Can you elaborate on what aspects of UX you want to focus on? I.e. user research, prototyping, strategy, logistics, information architecture or all of the above? What types of clients do you want to work on?
Thank you all. You’ve been a huge help and are a great community.
User research, interaction design and prototyping are the aspects that I’m most interested in. Ideally, I would like to get into civic or community-oriented projects similar to companies like Ideo or Exygy.
Let me know if more specifics are needed.
I must say. This group has really been helpful for me. I have a question... I have over 10 years working as a CD in agency’s and I recently took a UX UI boot camp for 8 weeks. How would you advise me to find a job in UX with just a few UX projects? I’m lost.
I find the description UX Designer misleading and most people are thinking of a UI/Visual Designer.
The nomenclature leads to confusion/expectations.
UXers how can this be fixed?
