I remember when they said the same about state lottery money…..

like

I tried and tried to tell people that any money coming from that would cause an equivalent amount of money just be sucked out of the Ed budget for other purposes. Little did I know that not only would that happen, but our lottery would be run so poorly that it barely makes money. Now people hope and wish that casinos would somehow help schools. But they don’t pay taxes, so how stupid can we be?

Our local Walmart used to throw away all the extra unsold school supplies until the manager talked to our ELA teacher. Now they donate to us and we do a stuff the bus with supplies! We get so many supplies that we share with all of our school in our district! Walmart is great, please talk to your local one

like

We just received word that 6 pallets of school supplies that Walmart would have thrown away can be picked up next week!

It's a shell game. The state decides how much to spend on education before they know the lottery/pot receipts. That's all they're spending. So, say the state decides to spend $100M on the schools (just to have a round number). If the lotto/pot tax brings in $1M, the state is on the hook for the other $99M. If the lotto/pot brings in $99M, the state is STILL only going to spend $100M. That just means they've got more money to spend on things other than schools. It's an accounting trick. It's popular, as everybody likes to feel like they're supporting schools. It's destructive, as people are unwilling to raise school taxes when "Hey, aren't the schools getting all that lotto/pot money?" is a convenient excuse. But ultimately, it's a political shell game.

Smoke and mirrors! Still buy everything myself!

Absolutely smoke and mirrors like every other Ed fund promise. It’s better than it was but still a pain. We have to order. We could have 25 students but we only get two packs of pencils with 12 each no matter what.

Cannabis legalization has made zero impact on my classroom or school supplies.

like

The money from marijuana in our state has to go to construction of buildings only.

Cannabis is legal in my state, yet I’ve never been given a dime for classroom supplies.

It was never earmarked for education, just a bunch of other programs.

I believe that the cannabis bill passed was signed. I am not sure who profits from it though because as it was written into the legislation that individual counties get to decide where the money is going. I believe it is only medical cannabis at this point. This year our local staples donated school supplies for our school. I don’t know how it happened, because I have been there 22 years and this is the first time. Also, I believe other companies like five below, dollar tree, target might also be able to help. I worked at my local food bank this summer with food distribution. One day while I was working, a worker from the local Panera showed up with bread, and pastries. Then Walmart came with vegetables. So my thought is to ask the big companies. I have seen signs that they give supplies to local schools but until this year, I just thought the sign was an advertisement.

That was the plan for some states that legalized, but not all. Illinois did not make that promise.

If we are getting money in education from having the most dispensaries per capita after passing our super loose law, I can’t tell at our school. But I have two dispensaries and an two grow houses under construction within 1 mile of my house. And I live in the country.

This seems to be true for any state plan. My state pushed for lotteries and more gambling campaigning how wonderfully it would fund our schools. I work in one of the most poor districts and pay for everything except the curriculum. Everything from paper clips, staples, pencil sharpeners, to printing out all the district e-docs. Yes, with my own printer and ink. However, other districts can and do help their teachers at least to some degree.

lol, we have recreational pot. Didn't increase my funding an iota.

We just pay high taxes.

Have you tried creating an Amazon wishlist for your class and sending the link to parents? I was so surprised with how much my parents have donated!

I have definitely seen that the parents who can help def want to.

Nope. Nope. Nope. I try and limit what I spend, but if it makes my life easier, and increases my students happiness (arts and crafts) then I open my wallet.
