I think it stresses students too much. Even when preparing for state testing it is not that useful because the state tests give plenty of time and there is the availability of calculators.
If your doing timed tests say for multiplication/division such as fact masters or rocket math, I’m for it. Except for your SPED students. But say chapter or skill tests don’t time it. This will not benefit them and may cause them to rush and make careless mistakes, where they may not have made the mistakes had they not felt rushed.
It depends on the purpose. If you are trying to assess the ability to solve, then no timed tests. If you are assessing the accuracy, then no timed tests. The only purpose I could see for timed tests is to see how fast a student can complete a problem and that’s what calculators are for. As a person who stresses out when a race against time is placed on math, I say that if my teacher really wants to gauge what I know, no timed tests.
