My old VP told me she almost didn’t hire me because she felt Asians might be too quiet and that she didn’t want to embarrass herself trying to pronounce my name in an interview. Glad she decided to give it a shot anyways. She is a great person but this just goes to show systematic racism or maybe negative stereotyping against Asian does exist.

Has anyone else ever been tempted to change their name to pass as white? I’ll admit it’s crossed my mind before, even if I’ve never seriously entertained the notion.
Well said K1!!
This makes me reflect on my experiences. I’m hapa and have a fully European name, but I am also pretty Asian in values and mannerisms. Personal food for thought on how I am seen versus my other Asian colleagues.
My spouse and I had a lengthy debate about this when we were naming our child. We both have Chinese first and last names, and every Asian couple we know has given their child an Anglo first name. We went against the trend and named our son a Chinese first name, with the full acknowledgement that he might have to deal with people mispronouncing his name and potentially getting prescreened out for jobs. This at least assuages my concern for the latter; I hope by the time he grows up, society will have evolved for the better.

@SM1 that’s what my parents went with for me and my siblings (Chinese name as middle name). This also allows for someone to choose the name they prefer to use (although I really don’t like my Chinese name so it wasn’t ever a choice in my mind).
Many of my friends also ended up with Asian names if they were born outside the US and Anglo names if born in the US, leading to sibling combinations like Yufei & Daniel (not actual names).
No one can pronounce my name correctly and I will never change my name for a job. I also don’t ever believe that my name is the reason I don’t get certain interviews as well
Did you see this on SAN?

Nah, just saw a friend post it. It’s possible they did?
Yep I did. Not legally but in the application- changed my name and got more interviews.
Spike Lee is out of luck already. +1 to the tally.
