I can see why this would be upsetting. I would feel the same way. But the better thing would be to be the bigger man (or woman) and let it go. These things have a way of sorting themselves out and unless it is immediately putting you at harm then just let this clown play at the circus.
I wouldn't worry about it. No one is going to hire her for a job you want. Anyone you want to work with or for is going to see it for exactly what it is.
Depends on the intent of portfolio. If they’re suddenly a creative thats a problem. But if they’re showcasing the work they oversaw in their marketing role - totally legit, can’t foul them for that.
E.g Producers have portfolios. They didn’t do the creative, but they produced them. Totally legit to showcase all the productions they produced and help bring to life.
Your client didn’t make them but oversaw xyz marketing campaign while a XYZ Senior Marketing Person.
My thoughts exactly. If she specified her role similarly to how you mentioned (like how producers do) I think it would make absolute sense.
That’s weird but I’d guess:
- they don’t realize how it looks or what they’ll doing is “wrong”
- they’re probably just really proud of the work y’all did and they want to showcase the projects they were responsible for overseeing

The client approved and paid for the work, right? You can also see it like this: Her posting it on her portfolio is a compliment.
Out of curiosity, are these experiences you’ve had with clients, too? I’ve just never heard of a client having a portfolio and would think they would want to specify their role in its development to help further the career they’ve pursued rather than claiming their role was “creative”. I think it’s fantastic she’s proud of the work and wants to share it. I’m just not one to claim I played a part I didn’t. If I made a website claiming I was client side that would incredibly bizarre.
I’ve seen clients post my work on LinkedIn and totally overhype their role in its creation without acknowledging anyone else’s and yeah, it can be frustrating… but mostly it’s just cringe.
As others have said, most people in the marketing/advertising world know where the ideas come from vs who gives the green lights.
Credit to the clients for not killing a great idea. And even more credit to you and your team for coming up with it in the first place.
