White male here, I've been cut off in line by multiple races and both genders. Some people are just assholes. I've found being an asshole exists across gender and race. Not to dispute OP'S experience, I think it is abhorrent.
I think we as consultants have an opportunity to be the change we want to see and treat those we interact with during our travel with common decency. Crazy, I know
Texan American here. East / West Coast Americans are the arrogant ones 👻
I feel you OP. I think it has more to do with age instead of race tho, tbh (unless you were flying out of Kentucky 😂). Had an older lady flying SW asking me what was my boarding number when I lined up and stood NEXT to her (instead of in front although I was the first number in the subsection). Old people just look at young faces and assume less of them. It may be them not used to having less "privilege" to others, and while race may have something to do with it, I'ma blame it on age. Just smile away and hope one day you don't become like them because you never know 😁
dammit
Why do you think it had anything to do with your age or race?
Am brown, I don’t get professionally offended over every little thing.
I usually ask ”Which line is this?” vs asking people directly what group or zone they are in. Found people are generally informative and pleasant in their responses
This is the best way to ask, in my opinion!
I like how people that have obviously never experienced a micro aggression or prejudice in their life is just writing off op’s feelings/experience.
I’ve faced microagressions and I am writing off OPs feelings and experience in this case.
Life tip: if you’re constantly looking for reasons to be offended, you’ll constantly be offended
How many times does a POC have to endure experiences of racism for others to believe POC when they call out experiences of racism?
The offender does not get to tell the offended when they are allowed to be offended.
D4, it’s great that as an immigrant POC to America, you are completely unaffected by American micro aggressions. This fact has absolutely no relevance upon whether other POCs should be affected by those same micro aggressions. All POC are not the same.
Whether or not an individual is a POC does have significant importance on whether they understand/ or are aware of/ care about the gravity, nuances, and implications of racism, microaggresions, and unconscious bias. This is why it is important for POC to speak up about their lived experiences and feelings and why non-POCs need to listen and believe POCs when they do so. That is the importance and goal of diversity: to get people out of their comfort zones and learn and understand about other cultures.
I would be more offended by you labeling him as an “old man”
Depending on how old he was, he may be referred to as ‘the oldest of old’
Why does it have to do with race / gender / age? Some people (apparently as you viewed it) are just asshats regardless of their race / gender / age.
Or maybe, he was being polite and you took it as a slight.
A1 you are just being annoying for the sake of it by this point
Pr(you are too touchy) > Pr(he is ___ist)
@A1 Interesting, aren’t you a minority/POC and a woman? What experiences with other minorities have you been villiainized for?
Why would you ask him...
@D5 I think it was a pretty normal question to ask and don’t think it was my fault
Not everything is about race or age or gender ffs
Almost sure I didn’t come off cocky or anything, just asking for a fact
I wad tired and having a bad day and cut in front of John McCain boarding ~5 years ago. He was gracious about it and ended up sitting in front of me. I’ll never forget what a dick I was that day.
F him. I love walking past all the men when I board as GS. Byyyyeeee🤸🏻♂️🏇🏽
Keeping it classy 🤗.
Don’t worry OP I’m in your same shoes a gate lice was standing around the group one Line and I asked her if she was in it. she took it Thinking had I asked if they were boarding group one. When I clearly asked if She was in group one. When I saw she didn’t move I was the last person to board for group 1. (I had gotten to the gate later than usual)
*gate louse
Lol this has nothing to do with gender or race and everything to do with OP not having the EQ to realise old man was feeling classed out due to her comment. Plz don't make this a race thing when it's not
EY4 - I appreciate your candid and calm reply and it’s good advice. I agree that maybe he took it in a completely different way than I intended, and he could just be having a shit day. I’m kinda over it by this point, so let’s all go to sleep, and move on.
This is such a non-issue.. Seriously who gives a hoot? Why even bother investing a second to think deeply about this? It’s not always about race, and even if it is who cares what some rando at a boarding line thinks about you? (and before I get asked to check my “privilege” let me quickly disclose that I’m brown)
Exactly
Say after me. I am not a victim. I am not a victim.
Also my bad if I made this too gender/race/age focused. In general just annoyed by the frequent bad and rude behaviors at the airport, and we have to face them so much
Makes sense, wanted to take a step back saying that I’m sure it happens to everyone especially some guys have shared their experiences, but was not trying to pivot the topic completely
So he invited you to go in front of him, and that’s a problem?
Thank you!! I always ask each person in line what their boarding group is and all I get is pissy responses.
