Nothing too useful to contribute except, I heard OMM associates get a Peloton perk, which sounds nice!

I’m thinking about increasing my wealth but wanted to see what options I have. I don’t know much about stocks. My best friend took a year off work and just traveled around South America with just a backpack and duffle bag of essentials. He spent about $5 to $10 a night at local hostels and food costs cheaper at local restaurants and shops. He spent roughly $500 a month on room and board. Aside from activities like bungee jumping or live sports events, most of the other activities costs little to nothing. Debating on saving up and just escape for a bit just like that.

As a junior associate, how do you find the healthy balance to take initiative in matters as opposed to wasting billable time on something the client won’t pay for or the partner might not actually want?

Anyone else sick of equity partners constantly telling their practice groups that the market is cooling off and everyone should step it up? I almost forwarded him the 5 recruiter/firm emails I received while on our weekly practice group call. Hilarious how firms are trying to reclaim the in control narrative with veiled threats.

I know that it likely “depends” and varies from firm to firm but does anyone have any insight on (or experience with) whether firms rely on “total billable hours” or “total billable hours credit” to determine whether hours have been met/bonus applies?

Started at a new big law firm almost five months ago. Had to ask the partner I report to for more work today for the first time since I started. I feel like a failure. Is this a normal scenario?

Associates who are still working from home: we are talking about communicating and connecting with associates. I would appreciate input from people who feel their firms are handling these issues really well. (Cont. in comments)

Everytime I work on the weekend I get into some sort of fight with my spouse. Anyone else get annoyed when their spouse constantly asks you when you’ll be done working, or asks how much longer you have to work. It annoys the hell out of me. I don’t want be working on a Sunday anymore than my spouse wants me to be working. But I have to. I don’t need reminded that I am disappointing my family in addition to working on the weekend. Am I alone in thinking this? Am I wrong to get so annoyed?

the main partner I work for hasn’t been giving me consistent enough work (or type I want) so while I work for him still on some deals, I’ve had to go and get other work from other partners. He doesn’t regularly check in on what I’m working on. He keeps volunteering me for projects without checking if I have capacity and if he expected to know everything I’m working on… he would’ve thought I was just doing nothing the last 2 months. I don’t know how to address this workload balancing with him!

Interviewing and if an office doesn’t have standing desks by now, I can’t do it. Is that too bougee? Are there many big law firms that still don’t have this?

likefunny

Had someone lateral into our firm as a fifth year (soon to be sixth). They were kind of a retool and went from small law to the firm I’m at. They are still learning a lot of basic stuff, and I think it’s weird that the firm hired someone at that level as a retool. They sometimes ask me for help with stuff, but I’m just getting annoyed at this point. Can I just say “no” since they’re about to be a mid/senior associate who should know all of this?
