Hi OP
I’m a senior manager in assurance. I’ve been the person getting piled on and I’ve had to also pile it on other people.
I have two pieces of advice for you. 1. An understaffed engagement is a risk to firm rep and quality. If managers cannot find staff, they need to go to the partner. Partner then needs to staff from any region they can. It can be done. There is no excuse for understaffing in a firm the size of PWC.
2. Before you quit suddenly, you should go the partner with your issue and put him on notice that this must be rectified ASAP. You need to make it clear though that the issue is not hard work; the issue is that there is risk to the engagement and an unfair burden on those left and if the firm will not respond appropriately then it is an issue you won’t tolerate. See point 1 above. Also, if they do nothing after you explained your position, then you won’t be burning a bridge when you quit since you have them a chance
Do not stick around and grind it out without speaking up or just hoping your hard work is appreciated.
Quitting in a middle of a crap engagement to go to a competitor would be icing on the cake.
“Anyone below manager is dispensable and replaceable” Lol. Everyone is replaceable. This is accounting not brain surgery.
Honestly, if you stay to “wrap this one up” vs. leaving now to your other job, it makes zero difference long term. It just has an effect on your current psych and anxiety.
If you quit, you would only boomerang back if you took a job you also hated and determined you would be stuck at. I’m sure PwC will take you back and not think about that one time a year ago you quit after busy season lol. Plus any other firm will take you. What’s there to lose?
Pfft. The managers are “looking” for seniors to help. The manager either need to step up and do work papers directly, or reach out to other offices for a senior. If you quit, they’ll have another senior there in a heartbeat.
two weeks on Monday without anything lined up. I have been interviewing, but am not too far in the process yet. Haven’t had a ton of time since I’ve been working until 11 every night. Someone talk me down from this. My family keeps telling me just to stop caring since I’m planning on getting a new job soon anyways, but that’s easier said then done. Everything feels like it’s in my shoulders since I’m now the last senior standing
You might be better off without that first year associate than with. Good luck man.
Also, I’m on a similar boat as you. Currently the only senior on the department’s biggest engagement. You would think they would want to have a second senior on it but nope. The joys of being understaffed.
What will happen if I quit on Monday? Would I burn a ton of bridges? Would they try and keep me? My team has lost two seniors and an exp associate in the last three weeks. I’ve talked to managers and they said they are doing their best with staffing, but there’s no other seniors available. They can get me a first year 🤦♂️🤦♂️
If you’re leaving in the middle of an engagement then chances are you would be burning bridges. If you want to try to maintain some sort of connection with the firm, it would be safer to leave after the engagement has wrapped. Then again, if you end up with an offer with a competitor there’s no point since bridges would have been burnt the moment you accept the offer so there’s no point in trying to leave at a right moment. At the end of the day, anyone below manager is dispensable and replaceable.
What level are you? Assuming you’re a senior since you’re the one getting the dump of the work lol.
It’s typical “time to quit” season I highly doubt any bridges would be burned.
Yeah I am a senior. Just if I quit, that leaves no seniors left on the job. I’m assuming they’ll have to get someone else if that’s the case. I know it would be better to wait, but I’m having anxiety thinking about all the all nighters I’m gonna have to pull in order to get this done
Do it
Tbh do you know how many resumes these firms have? ESPECIALLY PWC. Probably a shit ton. But if they can run engagements lean they will and wait til they get the person they want. If they are put in a position that they need to hire someone they will from their pool.
Exactly, every firm can pull the trigger at will for talent. You are replaceable.
As for burning bridges, you give then a two week notice that's all you are obligated to do. I left in the middle of an engagement for another firm. Lo and behold now I'm at EY.
The burning bridges thing is way, way, overstated.
OP you should definitely voice your concern before you put in your two weeks, I’m with EY3 on this, or else you’d burn tons of bridges, which won’t do you any good in your career. By any chance you’re on the notorious BM engagement in Alts???
