Not enough for the time away from home
Good point from EA1 as well. There’s a ton of variability in all of this too. You could be staffed in NYC and earn a lot more points at places charging north of $300/night, or you could be staffed in rural Wisconsin where the only option is the local Courtyard that charges $79/night.
I tried to give some middle of the road numbers, but your -mileage- may vary.
Hotels follow the same basic calculus. For a quick example, a Marriott Titanium Member earns 17.5 points per dollar of hotel spend. So assuming the same 45 weeks of travel, 3 nights every week in a $200/night room you’d expect to end up with at least 472,500 points.
Hotels tend to offer a lot more random bonuses on top though. Probably at least another 200k per year.
1000 just for checking in every week
1000 for skipping housekeeping for the week
15k-20k for whatever quarterly promotion is going on.
Sometimes a local property will give an incentive as well. The place I’m at now gives 2000/night.
Lastly, if you put hotel charges on a branded credit card, you’ll earn even more points. The Marriott card for example gives 6 points per dollar of spend at Marriott properties.
This should be pretty easy to figure out for your own personal situation. Most of the loyalty programs offer points based on a combination of money spent and your status with them.
For example, United will give their 1K customers 11 points per dollar of fare. If your typical round trip flight is $400 before taxes/fees, and you typically fly 45 weeks per year (52 - PTO and expected non-travel weeks), you’d end up with 198k points. Plus maybe another 20k or so from United promotions.
I traveled only half of the year and made 730k Marriott points. Lots of points to be made.
15k delta and 35k Marriott this year. Blessed to only have traveled 3 weeks this year for work 💙.
