On vacation and there's an active deal going on where I have to check the emails to see if my input is needed. Do you bill for this? I got 100 emails and checking this is very time consuming.

I hand out .1s and .25s like candy when I’m supposed to be on vacation. My time isn’t free, especially when I’m at the beach.

You should bill for this regardless of being on vacation

“Attend to correspondence regarding…”

Also: if you would usually record 8 hours vacation deduct the time.

Totally agree with AS1. When my firm switched to “unlimited” vacation, a bunch of us had accrued the maximum amount because of this and got sick paychecks.

Yeah if you work on vacation bill it and don’t bill it as vacation.

like

If you’re required to do it than obvs you should bill. “Monitor correspondence regarding…”

like

Yes. Any time you have to work is billable, even if it just means checking emails for an hour while you sit on the beach.

like

Of course!

Next time, I’d see if it’s possible to brief another associate prior to your vacation and ask the team to text you if your input is needed. I know it’s tougher for shorter vacations so I’ve tried to schedule longer vacations for this purpose. Also my firm says we shouldn’t bill time to checking email to keep up with deals while on vacation, but if it’s more than 15 minutes a day, I say definitely bill it!! My issue comes when I take a vacation and folks bother me on the weekends. I’ve raised this complaint so a partner told me I could bill my weekend time on the Friday or Monday so my vacation time is credited back.

Totally!

Job offer extended but now some red flags… I was extended an offer today with a pay raise and great benefits. It’s in a field that interests me more but, now some red flags have come up. They voided my offer after asking for time off way in advance in December of this year & the pay that was discussed on the phone is different from my offer letter. I asked the recruiter to clarify and she said I must’ve not heard her correctly on the phone. I’m not having second thoughts… I was excited.

I am currently at a firm and received an in-house offer. Aside from main items like comp and big ticket benefits like PTO/health insurance/401k, what other items do I need to think about discussing/negotiating? For example, fees to keep bar licensure, professional association fees, CLEs, etc. I feel like there is so much on that end I currently take for granted being covered at my firm. Anything else I should consider?

I’m a new associate to a T&E group, partner goes away on vacation and leaves me with a 706 to review and sign. The family is very wealthy. Decedent married for 60 years. Partner says it’s “just a DSUE election, decedent was ill for years, no assets.” Provides no records. Not even an admission the decedent owned a toothbrush. So I looked up the decedent’s home - it’s a joint asset. Partner was “surprised”, and still insists “no other assets”. I found file references to art and antiques.

Hello people,

Need some inputs!

When I file my ITR, it is auto-populating the 'income from other sources' by 40k and increasing my tax liability by 10k however form 26as shows no tax liability.

Should I edit the header to Rs. Xx which is below 10k hence tax exempted and stick to info as per 26AS?

Thanks a lot!

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I have a few former classmates and colleagues sweating over lateral interviews. Take a deep breath and relax.

First, doing these interviews does not define you as a person.

Second, take it one day at a time; if they are moving forward, they see something in you.

Third, remember that the people interviewing you are human beings. Connect with them, be personable.

Is it okay that I’ve been a slow junior as we’re hours away from closing? I’m trying to be proactive and available to cross things off the list but I’m SLOW: takes me long enough that they do it themselves (even though this wasn’t an issue earlier in the deal) and even on quick tasks or emails, they respond to it before I can click send. There’s also so much about closing that I don’t understand and I feel like I’m bothering the higher-ups on the team whenever I ask. *end anxiety post*
