SAME. Onto week 3

Awful!

How’re y’all doing with current firm? I’m struggling to stay focused and not completely check out.

I am completely checked out. Not blowing hard deadlines, but certainly stretching “nice to haves.” Not saving emails anymore. Not paying attention during meetings. Not answering email over the weekend unless super urgent.

Tip to Plaintiffs bar, the tough guy act is not as effective a tactic as you think it is. Bad behavior hurts your clients, gives overwhelmed ID lawyers and adjusters the excuse they need to triage your case and delay reporting for settlement authority.

I've been asked to help out interviewing potential software engineers on technical matters. What are some good questions to ask?

I'm already considering asking about their favorite programming language (and why), and whether they like to code in their free time and what they've built.

I don't want to have to ask stereotypical "how do you reverse a linked list" type questions if I can avoid it.

I’m 27 and I just got my first job earlier this year. How much 401K should I be contributing? My employer offers a 50% match of the first 6% with a max of $2400. I’m currently making 85K and I’m contributing 6% to my 401k as well. Currently I’m at 3.6K in my 401K and I’m not sure if I should contribute more to it. (Currently i’m going to be getting 7.5K/year in my 401k) I feel like since I started late in life, I’m probably not going to benefit as much from the 401k. Is it even worth it?

Additional Posts in Big Law

Long shot, but is there anyone here who has made a move from a US firm to a law firm or remote working for a US firm (or inhouse as a second choice) in Bangkok, Thailand? Interested due to family reasons but I understand that the legal market is pretty protected, so not sure how much of a long shot this is. Thanks!

My assistant gets visibly overwhelmed by basic tasks like printing or filing. She gets upset when we ask her to help with scheduling or answer phones during meetings. She will respond that simple assignments are “too hard.” At this point, I’m not sure what she thinks her job is. She is assigned to me and a partner, but it’s the same for both of us. She has worked with the partner since he was a first year so he has accepted it. Is there anything that I can do as an associate?

Associate at a regional big law firm in area where market has been impacted significantly by the recent salary bumps other firms have given to their associates in smaller offices. Our firm announced last week they would be providing market bumps for all associates but that only those associates who were “on pace” to bill their hours for the year by June 30 would qualify for the bump. Am I justified in feeling like this is completely ridiculous?

Had an argument with a partner last night.

He wanted me to prepare a presentation he was going to hold on recent developments in the law within our field.

I asked him whether I was going to make the presentation that he was going to hold by himself and in his own name only, and he said yes.

I then said that either we hold it together and I get to speak just a little or at least stand there, or he does it himself.

So fed up with satisfying narcissists.

Milbank matched DPW scale. Plus/minus 50% for associates with above 110% or below 80% “utilization” through 9/6 (including pro bono and legal work for firm). To be paid by Oct 30. December bonus expected to be no less than last year. Good for management and consistent with (imho) strong leadership during COVID.

Worked with a recruiter in the past and received multiple offers with her and even accepted and reneged on one. After that, told her I needed more time to re-assess the situation. Was working with another recruiter all the while and have since accepted a new role that I am starting soon. The original recruiter keeps following up (pretty aggressively). What should I tell him? Never signed anything binding with the original recruiter.
