Thanks Senior Strategist. That's what I thought. A client wants to use them for mundane stuff like "healthcare" and "science." I'm like #no.
#DependsOnContext
You literally just reiterated that it depends on the context
Is there a conversation around something you want people to be easily able to discover and join? Conference, new product launch, big initiative or campaign that needs it => maybe.
Also depends on the platform. Instagram has many great potential use cases, Facebook hardly any. Twitter somewhere in between.
Hashtags are good at capturing the idea of a post rather than the sum of their words. #lessononsocial
Use them for ironic meta commentary
Also, ritetag (sp*)
Depends On Context
Twitter hashtags aren’t dead. Don’t use them in lieu of overarching strategy, but still relevant for curating specific conversations without needing listening tools.
Best for:
- Conferences
- Presentations
- Campaigns with a social CTA that actually makes sense
Hashtagify. I think they’re currently down but love them
Ha ha. For live events like conferences, sure. But doesn't Twitter understand context? It knows you're talking about the Super Bowl even if you don't say #superbowl, right?
If you're looking for user generated content and have a desire to grab awareness (and have enough money behind the campaign), hashtags are still a thing.
Using hashtags just for the sake of hashtags doesn't help.
Good for extending reach. Clients always abuse the idea though. So
Rein in your clients, do some research on how many people actually search #health and #science, and go from their. It’s pretty unlikely that your reach will be extended though hashtags. Put paid support behind it instead
