Don't tell them until you accept the offer and clear conflicts.
Why would you raise it with your current firm if you (1) don’t have the written offer and (2) haven’t accepted (and cleared lateral conflicts)? I see no benefit.
I’ve never been through the lateral process but I believe traditional guidance is to wait until you clear conflicts at the new first before telling your current firm in case something in the conflicts process derails your transition/offer.
I just lateraled and was told by everyone do NOT tell anyone until you have the go-ahead that your conflicts are clear and nothings holding up your transition.
This has to be DLA
What's the point of telling them before accepting?
The reason I’m thinking of telling my firm (did not have room in OP) is:
1. I have a feeling the partner I work for will ask. And I don’t want to lie, because that feels bad in general and because of 2.
2. I don’t want to burn bridges. Or, really, I want to affirmatively reinforce bridges as much as I can. I think I’m well liked at my current firm so if for whatever the new firm is a toxic environment I would love having some sort of window to go back.
3. I would consider a counteroffer, and want to give them the time needed to consider that and put it together.
It would be strange and didn’t end up happening, but she knows that a lot of people are unhappy with comp (DLA, as a commenter correctly guessed) and I’ve been more vocal about it then the average associate. Also my work has been slipping a little from being distracted and focused on this lateral process so I think she’s noticed that and could check the unexplainable dip in my hours on several days although I’m objectively slammed with work. Finally, she’s very blunt.
But also I need to remember she’s a busy partner and I’m a neurotic associate so 🤷♂️

Why would you tell your current firm?
Lol I think four of us replied at the same time
Wait til you get the offer and have at least a basis to think conflicts will clear. Then if you want to get a counter offer you can. But you should know what you want and ask fir it, and be prepared to walk away and accept the other offer if you don’t get it.
