Try to put yourself in your manager's position. Effectively do their job for them. And communicate. Once a manager feels like his/her to-do list is shrinking because of you, you're golden. And once you have people working for you, you'll feel the same way. Everyone just wants to go home. Help someone achieve that and you'll be rewarded. Easy. As. That. Be proactive.
