Well I don't see anyone answering your question yet. Hence my 2 cents and it can take with a pinch of salt. Banking (especially the ones primarily into investment banking and trading) will be the first to hit when things go south. Hence ask you friend to shamelessly send some connects in LinkedIn to people who will be working there (including the person who would have take the interview) and try to get in touch with them.
He can candidly say that he is seriously considering joining as this was his dream to be part of such niche company and casually check with them about WLB and more importantly job security
