One of my friends in Silicon Valley was telling me about the lawsuit in Cisco whereby they were sued for internally having the Indian caste system influence recruiting and promotions. I have never seen or heard of anything like this until recently. Is this just Cisco or a problem elsewhere too?

It’s not hard to believe it happens everywhere.

When people meet you what do they ask?
Where do you work? Go to school, city raised?

People are sizing you up. Do we really need to know any of this?

I pray that the issue is rectified.

From my limited understanding, it seems like the issue wasn’t that he was from a “lower caste” but from the “lowest caste” and that’s why he was discriminated against.

I believe it. People discriminate against others all the time.

Lol what

like

But how do you even sue for this? Caste is not under EEO protection, like age, gender, religion, etc.

Watch it get thrown out of court because “only black people can experience racism”

like

I'm a black man, and I believe that racism can be experienced and perpetrated by any group of people, but man, that's a pretty bold statement. I hope you don't carry that mindset around with you; it's not a good thing to harbor inside brother.

It’s real. I was at Cisco for 3+ years and saw how some Indian folks were treated different then others.

Imagine if this was true? How behind in terms of progress is a company like this. ‘Oh dudes a genius but he’s a low caste, no promotion’

And, more significantly, wasting talent in a country also.

This is more common than people know or want to acknowledge. This is still discrimination based on a protected class ie. ethnicity.

It is a problem. Specially when someone has something to gain out of making ghosts issues.

How can Indian folks tell what caste another Indian person is from? Is the last name a giveaway or?

C2: I moved from India as well so I certainly understand the basics at least in the region I was born in. In the southern part of India, I understand given the longer names, you could make more stuff out of it. But it can be a few things out of what you listed not all I guess.

I am also baffled though that people continue with these kind of stuff. I guess the tribalism in us finds way to manifest and this seems like a readymade framework to leverage.

Seems like a case of You leave your manager and not the firm .... manager dislikes you and so you get no opportunities forcing you to leave . Happens everywhere

Here you go. Was discussed in detail on the “Desi’s” bowl (people of Indian, Pakistan, Sri Lankan or Bangladeshi origin). https://joinfishbowl.com/post_si4kg

I believe this. I doubt any white/asian/black/Hispanic folks care or know but I guarantee the Indian folks did, especially in Indian dominant departments.

I see snippets of this at my current client but it’s more so certain clients just disliking others/not inviting them to their parties
