One of my interns is exceptionally rude. Normally I'd fire an employee for constantly being unprofessional, but they're in the last few months of their internship, so is it worth it?

I think this is an excellent opportunity for a teaching moment.

Have a 1-on-1 with them and discuss their problem behaviors . Go into specific examples of their rude behavior, discuss how this impacts the team and the project, and give examples of how they should have behaved. Make sure to tell them that if they do not resolve this problem it may impact getting a reference, their chances of getting a permanent position in the future, and might even result in termination. Have follow up reviews with them at least once a week.

If they improve, continue to work with them. If they ignore your directions and continue to be rude, remove them from any projects and/or terminate them.

Being an intern recently, I would agree with this solution.. it is a great option to provide coaching and learning for the team member. I found my most valuable growth opportunities are through 1:1 feedback conversations, including behaviors I did not recognize I was doing which led to correction, a much better internship for myself, and for the team. Would not hurt to share perspective and hopefully they take it to develop further.

helpful

Have you tried talking with them about it? Interns are kinda earmarked as less experienced--is it possible that perhaps they simply don't realize the ways in which they're being unprofessional? When you work directly over an intern, it becomes your responsibility at least in part to help mentor them.

agree, this could be an important early lesson for them to learn from, regardless if their response is constructive or not.

Meh, people get what they earn, if they earn being let go, so be it. Can't enable poor behavior.

like

I’d probably let them stay but refuse all requests for references.

LOL @SC1, my thoughts exactly

Might be worth mentioning it to them and letting them know what the expectations are for their behavior.

Interesting to see mostly seniors commenting so harshly, when they have not even met the person... What have they done if so rude, OP?

If they are creating a hostile environment for your full time people, then consider the damage they may be doing over there.

I definitely wouldn't let them go without a lashing.

Have you talked to them directly about this? If they continue after that, I'd let them go. But if you haven't yet, give the feedback and see how they respond!
