One of my parents suddenly passed away. I don’t think a week is enough for me to recover and plan for the other parent. The right thing for me and my family is at least three weeks off while I focus on future plans for the surviving parent. I’m not sure how my team will react but who cares.

I’m so sorry. I lost my mom this year during busy season and lost my dad a few years ago. Taking the time is crucial. Tell them as soon as possible. If they don’t give you the time you need, they are not decent humans and not worth working for.

This. My dad passed away unexpectedly beginning of busy season last year. I was told take as mich time as you need. I ended up taking three weeks ago that I could stay a little longer to help my mom out with certain things since I had a little more flexibility to do so than my brothers when it happened.

like

Same thing happened to me in December OP, don’t phrase it as an ask to your leadership, more just giving them a heads up that you need the three weeks. Take your time, no one can judge how you grieve or manage your personal affairs

like

I’m sorry for your loss and you should take the time you need during this difficult time

like

Your team will understand that you need to take additional time off and will be supportive, so just go ahead and take the time you need. It may mean some of your team will need to take some of the strain, but you will do the same for others in the future.

like

Absolutely take the time you need. Do not in any way worry about your team, they will all understand. So sorry OP.

like

Sorry for your loss. Talk to your manager and s/he will understand. A couple of years ago when my mom passed away, I talked to my manager and I made clear my mind wasn't there. I was able to take almost 1 month off.

like

I’m sorry to hear that. If anyone gives you any trouble at all, they are not worth working with. We can always find a way to manage team needs when something like this happens, no matter how urgent some client deadline is

like

Really sorry for your loss. Just take the time you need let HR know too.

Alright moms. 4th kid in daycare and this one just won’t nap. We send a portable white noise machine and she has a lovey. But she apparently has serious FOMO. I’ve asked them to move her to the furthest corner. Then moved her to the younger baby room. But I’m out of ideas. 11 months old (10 mo adjusted). I had chalked it up to just starting at daycare but we are almost 2 months in. She’s a hot mess in the evenings. What magic do you have for me. All of my others fell in a routine by now!

Not nearly enough messages. Was a senior when I had a kid...so nice of KPMG to NOT tell me the way to properly submit for parental leave back in the day.

Have been pinged for a possible role as Director of Operations at a promising looking startup with a 50%% pay increase & equity. It looks like an amazing opportunity.. but my husband and I have just started trying for our first kid, and I'm not sure about leaving the stability and benefits of Big 4, even though I feel like I have run out of career growth here. Has anyone changed jobs at a similar point, or worked at a startup as a new mom, that might be able to share perspective or opinions?

I feel like my kids 1st grade teacher is being too strict, but I'm not sure if this is normal or I'm being sensitive because it's my child. E.g. she gave him 2/10 for his math homework because he doodled on the page, colored in the circle that has the page number, didn't draw the word problem neatly, wrote his last name under the name line, and says some of his numbers aren't legible. All his answers were correct, except one where he forgot to fill in the blank. Is this normal? X-posting

How normal is it to be pulled off a trial team because you tell your boss you are moving after trial? I have a trial coming up first week of Oct. This case has been my baby, and I’m going to try it with my boss. I tell my boss up front that, for family reasons, I’ve gotten a new job and will be moving to another city two weeks after trial will likely end. He then gives my trial witnesses to another attorney, but is still going to make me do grunt work. Is he unreasonable or am I?

Hi! We have a jogathon fundraising in my son’s school. Most of our families are overseas, and don’t want to ask donations to few friends during this difficult times. Our friends also have school age kids. Is it ok if we just do one donation as family? My son wanted to get the expensive prices, but dont want to spend $150 for a kid’s hot lunch. Sorry if it is a dumb question but it is our first fundraising. Thanks

Let's get a thread going of parental leave policies? What's the parental leave policy at your agency

I’m terrified of pregnancy but not of motherhood (except for the noise, kids are so loud). Pregnancy/breastfeeding looks horrible to me, but I’d feel bad about missing out on kids because I was scared of something that wasn’t so bad. It doesn’t help that I don’t know a single pregnant person—in my 30s and none of my friends have children! Any moms out there who can speak about what it’s actually like?

Trying to get a better understanding of the difference in hour requirements between Big 4 tax and a law firm. I’ll be joining a firm that has a 1850 billable requirement with bonus eligibility starting at 1900. In Big 4 tax I regularly worked 50 hour weeks but had low billables (~30hr per week) b/c there wasnt always work to do and quite a bit of admin. Can you hit 1900 working 50 hour weeks, or are most people putting in closer to 60 hour weeks?

ACN SM here. I did the math yesterday and my annual base salary/no. of hours worked per week (either actively working or stressing about work) comes to peanuts! I did this bcos an NGO has made me an offer that is significantly lower than my base, but the hours are more reasonable - so suffice it to say my hourly rate is better. I'm torn.. lower salary/better WLB vs more $$$ but no life

I had my onsite 5 weeks ago, and recruiter reached out last week saying I cleared Hiring Committee, and that he’s waiting for VP approval before we move on to compensation talk. How long does the VP approval typically take? And what is the probability of rejection at this stage? Also, how many more review stages are there before I am made a written offer (assuming I clear VP approval)? Thanks!
