I still wouldn’t have listened anyway even if it was coming from a future me
1. Listen more than you speak. One of the tell-tale signs of someone that is “green” is someone that blabs too much. So I’d tell myself to appear less junior to speak much, much less.
2. Read The 48 Laws of Power to understand politics in any industry. It will be the greatest navigational system for the corporate world you will ever, ever read. Right now. Read it. Older people try to manipulate younger people. Don’t let them. Use this guidebook & your life will change forever.

Life-changing. You’re welcome.
You may think one more Long Island Iced Tea at the office Christmas party in 2016 won’t hurt, but believe you me, you’ll be jobless on the street the next morning over a joke you said about the brand lead going bald.
Oh, and don’t buy that hideous shirt on sale at Macy’s in 2018, just don’t. You look like a clown
One last thing, don’t propose to her. That “incident” by the canal with that guy you met on the metro wasn’t a mistake. You’re definitely gay and you know it, asshole.
@CD brand lead was in the CD’s back pocket and surprisingly a bit over-the-top insecure about his hair loss, he already didn’t like me much. I didn’t say anything bad, I made a pun about it- but identifying it was enough for him to turn against me, in the following weeks he was not my biggest fan. When business changed a month later and people had to be laid off, he advocated to have me furloughed instead of moved to another client. Lol
Switch jobs more often. Set your salary requirements/rates higher than you think you should. Keep all the files. Be nice to people, but don't be afraid to stand your ground, even if it pisses people off. Learn how to network better, even if it makes you want to jam a fork into your brain.
:) thanks for this all

Don’t go into advertising.
1) keep the weight off.
2) when you leave advertising in 1994, don’t go back in 1995. Or ever.
3) learn to read directions. OP asked for one thing, not more than one.

Save money. As much as possible.
Go to med school. Or figure out how to get fired up about finance or investment banking. Do something that helps people or makes a lot of money. This industry does neither.
I'm doing it right now. LOL
Get to know absolutely everyone. I had the benefit of halfway taking this advice. But I would do it even more.
You will find good work a million times faster when you have a network to call on. And every new conversation is easier when you have mutual work friends.
I'd also add: people know more than you think they know. My friends and I would whine that a CD didn't even see the time we put in or how leadership didn't even realize how checked out someone else was. Then layoffs would roll around... So keep at it. People definitely are having conversations you're just not aware of.
Aim for in-house instead of agency experience

Don’t check LinkedIn and compare yourself to
colleagues. Oh, and don’t get romantically involved with that girl in project management. Don’t worry...You’ll know her when you see her.
Know your worth. Stand up for yourself more and for the love of god don’t laugh it off every time you are sexually harassed (in the workplace or otherwise). It is not ok and you have every right to say so.
