You don't need a course.

Never approach a line with some vague thought or "I write what feels right". You can't write what you don't know. If you don't understand something in a brief or a product or any reading material, ask. Dig deep into your subject. Do your research homework. Approach every line as an idea. Approach them from different angles. Write them straight so you're not bogged down by crafting. (Google scamp's blog and strategy lines) Don't be overly critical when writing. Then craft and finesse. Do the grind: Write hundreds and thousands of them for that one line if you have to and if time permits. Write long copy or a manifesto to get into the zone, sometimes a line is buried in the flow. Look up common sayings and twist them. Imagine different voices and actors. Compare one thing with another. Pair unexpected things. Read anything and everything. Try to collect your favorite phrases from anywhere. If you can, write with someone more experienced. Jam together on a shared Google doc. Every writer you'll ever meet, every line you'll ever read--analyse and break down the why and how. Pretending to explain it to your own imaginary mentee is best way to learn.

Thank you so much. This comment of yours is a short course in itself. Much appreciated.

- “Junior” a new book by Thomas Kemeny
- “Hey Whipple Squeeze This” a classic by Luke Sullivan
- And a few old schoolers (albeit very well-decorated old schoolers) recommend “The Book of Gossage” as universal ad truths though I haven’t read this last one. It’s on my list.

As for ad schools, I didn’t go myself but AdHouse in NY is offering reasonably-priced online courses. I love their A-List Podcast.

Not a course, but the book Read Me is incredible. It has working examples and at the end of each chapter there's a little exercise for you to do.

I got given it at one of my first book crits and now I make sure every junior that asks me for one hears about it. It's great however much experience you have though.

Another one is How to Write Better Copy by Steve Harrison. :)

I took a (mostly) online course from Brainco for $500-ish. It helped to have a creative director work through my ideas with me — mainly to cut through the clutter of my own bias. But I made my best progress just trying to imitate Tom McElligott. Once you become obsessed, you’re well on the way to mastery.

like

Also!!! Don’t be afraid to imitate at first. You can’t be anybody else. Eventually your own style will shine through.

Read books about creating and innovative problem solving. It’s all about the idea. Practice solving problems. Read books about writing well. Read a lot of well written books. Write a lot. A whole lot. Buy books on great advertising case studies. Learn how the strategy creative was developed. Visit ad sites and subscribe to periodicals that study innovative advertising. Do all of this and you’re probably ready to make use of ad copywriting books. I agree with Junior, Hey Whipple and The Copywriter’s Bible. Also take a look at The Idea Writers, and The Houdini Solution.

If you have a portfolio get people you respect to critique the work. Some people give very detailed input. There will be a lot of instruction on how to write better if you study what’s being said.

A place that does go into detail on critiques is Job Propulsion Lab. Follow Job Propulsion Lab’s social channels and apply for a free critique on the site.

Hope these suggestions help.

Law firm A: confirm that all of the documents are final Company A: confirm you release signature pages. Law Firm B and Company B: same? I know some firms have a nice script but I’m too fried to recollect it.

So many jr copywriter jobs seem to be asking for 5+ years of experience. Honestly, how is someone supposed to build real experience (not internships) when all these entry level jobs ask for years of agency experience? I’m at a loss at how I’m supposed to build my career at this point.
