Hi fishes,
Any guess how many people are laid off from Publicis sapient in past few days? Really scared for my future as I'm also under probation period and deeply regret for my choice of joining this firm...I don't understand why were they recruiting peeps when they were short of projects. Publicis Sapient

I'm Indian, and I agree - work related conversations should always happen in English. In fact, if the team frequently hangs out after work, I think those conversations should be in English too, so as to not alienate the non-Indian persons on the team, because we work in an industry where our team camaraderie is very likely to affect our work product. Since they chose to come to the US , they should speak the local language at work and work-related events.
Just start calling them each Bahen Chod. They'll love it.
OP literally said that part was joking. They are more comfortable speaking in Hindi so it makes sense why they would flip to that. English isn't our official language, they don't have to speak it first.
कृपया करके हिंदी सीख लीजिए!
Go learn some hindi man. I learned enough to say...
Why does your code suck, you need to pick up the pace, I'm going to learn more hindi just to taunt you, and let's get beers.
It was a fun exercise
@D1 English is the USAs official language. The country to which his employer and his client sit in. Why is that so hard to grasp?
Relax they were kidding. I was the only indian woman in a spanish teAm and everyone said i need to learn spanish
Remind them that in Trump's America, all non-English languages are known as "Mexican" and are illegal
I wouldn't make too much of the comment. Probably a miscalculated joke. Just ask what they said. I did that when there was an inside joke amongst non-India team members. Had a team member who wasn't Indian but would totally calmly ask what was said
Them saying that you should learn is not right. Lay down English only policy. Btw I am a Indian.
I'd find a new team. You'll be an outsider forever with their mentality.
Alternative fact - Hindi is more prominent so OP should learn it
Indian here. I always make it a point to respond in English even if the other guy is speaking in hindi if there is someone around who does not speak hindi even if the conversation is not work related. I feel its disrespectful of your indian co-workers to behave like that. That being said, as an Indian who knows so many indians, I do think that the group does not mean to be direspectful and they don't realize how uncomfortable it makes you feel. Just talk it out to them and tell them how you feel.
While being a hindi patriot, I am with you OP, inclusion should be both ways.
Seriously confused by this convo. They are in America. As far as I know, they are not being held hostage here. Assimilate and speak English in EVERY convo - work related or not- when with someone who doesn't speak your foreign language- period.
I am an Indian and agree with OP. Both speaking in Hindi and asking others to learn is very unprofessional. The language spoken and understood in US is English, Period
I hope the 6 people who upvoted my comment had their sarcasm detectors on.
Rosetta Stone. 😊 But seriously, it's not acceptable! Tell them you're in the room too. I am Indian btw, and hate when others do this
Spy2016 are you dumb or just pretending to be? Even if it's not designated as the official language, it's the language that laws are written in, and it's the language that 80% of the population speaks. If no languages are designated as the official language, at least English would be the expectation by default. Are you really going to defend speaking non-English in a work environment based on a technicality? It's absurd that anyone would even try to debate this. I'm not even a native English speaker and speak a different language at home but if anyone on my team tried to make speaking in a different language a regular occurrence in the team room, especially knowing that somebody in the room doesn't speak that language, I would shut that down immediately. That is rude, plain and simple.
Which can be loosely translated to "Listen up fuckers, speak English. "
Indian here. Not sure how many of you all aware this. Even in India, english is the official language, and most of the people at work speak english. Generally even if one or two south Indian (who generally does not speak in hindi natively) teammates are in team, entire team is expected to speak in english (at least as a courtousy). Hindi is an official language in India but not the national language and for most of the office works (including public sector & private sector) ENGLISH is the first and official language is in use in India. I am sure a ENGLISH-ONLY speaker in India can survive very easily in many parts of India better than HINDI-only speaker. So, even if all are Indians in the team and the team is in India, it is still considered as RUDE to ask someone to speak in Hindi. So OP, in nutshell you are with dickheads! I can speak Hindi, English and my native language Telugu (Indian language) but never insist someone to speak in some particular language.
