I see variants of this all the time. [it’s usually entitled owners who think leash laws don’t apply to them]. or their dog is friendly and your’s is the problem.
when you a dog controlling an owner - move away. nothing good will come from it.
you’re 1000% right, he was wrong. but don’t make a bigger deal of it because you don’t know what he will do or how he will respond.
Thanks VP! Definitely an entitled owner situation, he kept repeating “well *my* dog is friendly!”.
Going to just turn around next time 🤦🏼♀️
You’re in the right and the other guy sounds like a moron. As VP said I’d just move on as it’s not worth it.
Thanks A1! Just want to be a responsible dog owner for all! 🐕

You were absolutely within your rights to protect your dog and control the situation. You were being the responsible dog owner here, not the other one. So many dog owners think that they have the right to allow their dogs to meet every dog and person along a walk. That’s just not the case. We don’t walk down the sidewalk shaking everyone’s hands and meeting new people, do we? No, because that is ridiculous and weird. Why would we expect our dogs to be doing that?
When I am walking my dogs, we are out for their benefit. They are doing their potty business, getting fresh air and exercise and getting to smell things along the way. We don’t need other dogs getting in their faces or trying to hump them or anything else.
Couldn’t agree more SM1. I just want both my dog and I to enjoy our walk! Especially in a pandemic I don’t need to be closer to people I don’t know 😅
I hate when people do this. Unfortunately you can’t always train proper etiquette to humans so I try to keep my distance in these situations. It helps if you can train your dog to look at you when they come across another dog. Thanks for posting this, sadly a lot of owners think they are entitled to invade your personal space
Thanks C1! And great advice on getting your pup to focus on you. Fortunately our pup is trained to “check in” with us and if we say “look at me” they focus on command. Maybe I’ll start enforcing it when we pass another dog.
As you said- we can’t train others! I’ll definitely be keeping my distance more 😞

It doesn't matter why you don't want them to interact. You're the owner and it's your right. That guy had no right to force your dog to interact or put the dog in an uncomfortable situation. You did everything correctly
Alerting people. Were we in the wrong? Our dog is not unfriendly or aggressive at all, but doesn’t like other dogs who get in his face. We thought that putting space between us/them would be indicative enough to not approach. The other dog was clearly poorly leash trained.
Thoughts? Are we responsible to alert *every* person we pass or were our cues enough?
We’re in NYC, if that matters.
I feel like something is being left out here....
Thanks for the reco AM1, following her now! We got a trainer when we first rescued to learn about boundaries / structure, but keeping refreshed on it is important
