Opportunity to lead a project in a familiar area or be a teammember on a completely new project. Trying to get promoted & Mgr gave me these options. Inclined towards the latter bt worried abt promotion

Unpopular opinion here but depending on how many projects you've already led i would say new subject (but only if you already have leading experience)

You can join a new project as a team member and become a SME that people look up to

Plus it adds to your resume of your skillset. I see it as a long term vs short term plan. I don't know how it works in your company, but if you're already up for promotion this shouldn't change based on the role you take ? Or would it?

I think this is valid if OP was just promoted (and therefore not needing to prove him or herself). But if OP is in the promotion window (or, conversely, within the lay-off window given the economic situation), it is much better to play a bit safer and to one’s strengths as a leader in a known field.

I’ve also heard of friends with very strong cases for promotion getting pushed to the next promo cycle because they had a bad case right at the end of the promo consideration window, which threw somewhat of a question mark on the earlier successes. So I wouldn’t advise risking the opp in an uncertain time!

Lead project in familiar area

Lead

^ ^ ^ what they said

Seems like popular opinion would be to go with leading the project... But as C1 said, I've been leading a few minor projects since last year. I led a very similar project to the one manager wants me in last year.. I think she was totally going to give to me but just mentioned this other thing which got me interested... I was thinking what would help in the long term - Diverse projects on resume or a new title...

New title. Because leading a similar project doesn’t mean it will be a cake walk - you can find stretch roles within it. Leading even more senior client meetings. Scoping out the next phase of work. Selling a different but adjacent project.

You get my drift. Make this a MAJOR project for you to crush. Be known for something at your firm.

Nature of the job is that you’ll be expected to learn things you don’t know while specializing anyway...and leading others. That last piece is huge.

My two cents at least!

Need advice. I have a client who just can't stop getting in their own way. They push us to turn a document quickly (in this case, an LPA for a new fund), and then take weeks to review, following up with a 50-page chart setting forth the LPA sections and detailed questions/comments. I can't keep anyone on this client because their process is so brutally and unnecessarily time-consuming, and I can't keep pulling all-nighters just trying to respond to all the questions. What do I do?

I studied computer science in school but I didn’t do well due to life coming in the way. I got poor grades but ultimately finished my degree without any internship experience.

After three months of job search, I started for 45K at a construction company as a Jr App Support. After a year I shifted in to QA for 65k and now after a year of QA, I have finally gotten a position as a software engineer for 78K base.

The imposter syndrome is finally gone!

Hang in there, hard work pays off.

So I’m thinking of taking a pharmacy tech course at my local community college. I already work in healthcare on the admin side (authorizations, front desk etc) & looking to get a certification that’s quick & don’t have to go back to school. How is it being a tech in the hospital setting? What other paths are there for techs? How much can you make? Or are there any other short certifications that would make more money?

What do you wish design students would learn in school to ease the transition into needs of business? I have seen an increasing need for more education/inclusion/overlap into other areas of business that depend on design teams so they understand what goes into the process. As well as design teams into the other business teams. This would alleviate tensions and improve quality product delivery due to the major miscommunications that occur so frequently.

You CAN be that leader that people want to work with. 1st, self assessment is required. Be honest: As a leader, have you engaged in/accepted Attribution Bias with a dash of gender &/or race bias? (See the pic) This is something we all need to be aware of as we lead our teams, provide performance feedback, & model the behaviors we'd like to see more of on our teams. Be on the lookout for Attribution Bias in yourself & on your team. It's a hindrance to creating a high-performing, inclusive culture.
