Other than having a gap on your resume, why is it bad to leave a job without another one lined up? Will hiring companies assume you got fired?

No income would be my #1 reason…

Yes, but with the weird year we have had, I would blame/explain it on/due to Covid. I know several people who said Covid made them look at what they were doing and where they really wanted to do and left what I thought were good jobs to reset.

like

Yes, unless you have a good explanation. At my last firm, I was on the hiring committee and one candidate was a junior lawyer who said she quit her Associate job 3 months earlier. When we asked why, she said something vague like “just wanted a new opportunity”. I’m not proud of this but we automatically jumped to “she must’ve got fired / there must have been some type of falling out / maybe she was in a relationship with the managing partner” etc. People’s minds run wild.

like

How did it work out? Was she a good hire?

Must be nice not to have to worry about the money…

Haha well, I wouldn’t say it’s not a concern. But I’ve saved up a decent amount and live somewhere with a relatively low COL.

like

Losing leverage of “I currently make $x and cannot accept less than that”

like

Could just as easily say that at your last job you made x and would not take anything lower now.

Potential employers will assume something went wrong, even if it didn’t

like

Plenty of people have gaps in their resumes even when they have another job lined up before quitting, e.g. to take a break in between, sometimes multiple months long. I wouldn’t stress it.

like

You won’t seem as desperate, which can translate to getting better terms at a new employer.

like

If the potential employer doesn’t assume you got fired, it could look irresponsible and/or that you make decisions that are not well thought out or based off of emotion, neither of which are good things in a business environment.

like

Very true. Thanks for this perspective!

The hiring committee will question your commitment if you don’t have a good explanation or legit reason. We either think you’re hiding something, got fired, or are fickle or lazy.

maybe.....

Usually you can negotiate time on the firm website so it still looks like you’re working there? Although I assume this is more for when you’re pushed out than when you actively quit

Because they will assume that you got fired for a bad reason as no one voluntarily leaves a job to be unemployed.

I’ve thought about it mainly because then I’d actually have time to job hunt/interview/etc. if I weren’t working elsewhere.
