Other than salary, what’s so good about investment banking? I just don’t get it.

My exact point. I know someone who was desperate to get into IB and even left consulting after 3 years to do an internship in an investment bank…

like

I hate to break it to you, its like consulting where your hours/man labor > actual skills. You can learn a hot tech skill or two + sit between tech and business at a company and make just as much with a way better life. Sorry bankers

It’s literally only about the money

like

Not a route I want to go, but there’s prestige and network as well. I also think the idea of spending all your time doing transactions and negotiations and such would actually be very exciting

like

Definitely a lot of slide work and excel. But it’s the content of that work that matters. It’s the ability to be working on a deal, then be invited to the negotiation with xx CEO. Or to be working on something, have it happen, then read about it in the WSJ the next day.

Yes you might have only done the slide work, but as my boy Aaron Burr would say - you get to be in the room where it happens

like

Absolutely nothing other than money, and expectation that you might be able to make even more if you exit into the buy-side. Given insane hours and diminishing marginal utility of income, don’t think it’s worth it all tho. Might be for the especially money-hungry, or rare people who actually find finance interesting

like

Exits to PE/VC, albeit hard exits. Unlike consulting, you actually specialize in finance and in an industry early on.

Tbh, I don't know what's in M&A consulting. But banking also covers debt and equity deals where they help companies issue bonds/IPO. They really drill into the numbers (ebitda - their favorite)

I just don’t get the hype. 🤣

I’m in final stages of interviews with Accenture for a PM role. I’m based in Chicago with over 5 years relevant experience and certified in agile. Before talking more, the recruiter gave a 105 salary cap, but averages online look more like 112-123. They seem very excited about me.

If I get the offer, should I go ahead and ask for higher? Any Accenture PMs have additional info on salary and/or salary band levels (or who just generally have tips)?

Thanks in advance!

Fox Rothschild, litigation, Delaware, mid level

Considering a move from a larger BigLaw firm to Fox Rothschild, primarily to work on matters I’m more interested in, but hopefully to also have a slightly better work life balance. I know it would be a pay cut though, and their various covid cuts have me concerned as well.

Any insight from current or former associates? What is firm culture like? Is work life balance decent enough to justify a lower salary?

Employee stock purchase plans. My employer has an ESPP that allows me to buy stock at 5% discount on the last day of each month. There are no fees for purchasing the stock or reinvesting dividends. There is a $15-30 fee to sell depending on the type of sales order. Is it worth it to contribute and sell once or twice a year to take advantage of the 5% “free money” while also avoiding the risk of putting too much money in my employer? It’s a pretty stable utility if that matters.

3 years ago was recruited away from D to a PE portfolio company to run M&A and other strategy work. Things have gone well and company is prepping for exit. Thinking about going back to consulting after exit: what options are out there? I left D as an M and would only consider returning as “senior” SM or higher. Who else is hiring at higher levels in M&A? What does starting comp look like for SM (or equivalent) role?

Newer hiring manager here. My finalist gave us their range at the beginning of the interview process that was a bit above our budget for the position but in the ballpark. In our initial offer, we met them at the very top of their range and I got HR/finance approval to stretch. They have countered with a higher ask in salary despite being aware of this info. I can’t help but have a bad taste in my mouth and my leadership is not pleased. Would you stick to the initial offer or rescind altogether?

SO and I are debating contributing to 401k this year since the rate of return is around -11% on our portfolios this year. I believe it would be better off saving the cash in my account.

I'm thinking of contributing again when/if the market picks up next year. Thoughts?

Just got an offer from a BB in a sweaty coverage group. I’m a 1st year analyst at a MM tier II bank right now, coming in as a lateral. The offer is 85k + 10k signing (I will lose my original signing bonus bc of clawback and the bonus I’ve been accruing here ~15k). Does anyone have advice on how I can ask for more money or figure out who the other lateral hires are to see if they negotiated anything?
