He legit probably wrote this from his home office with no plans to commute anywhere anytime soon. Not my fault I joined an industry that pays well and makes money but still have respect for myself and my wishes? If my company doesn’t want to pay me for working from home then so be it, I’ll either deal with the commute or find a company that will.

Deep down we all know that this WFH thing can’t last. Lol I want it to stay like this, too, but reality will intervene. COVID, in America at least, has been all but handled. There ARE some benefits to working in-person. I’m sure there’ll be more WFH part-timers, but I don’t think long-term WFH will remain.

If enough people demand it lol it will happen lol. Lol.

Bad Takes Daily. Imagine thinking “we provide you free soda and a ping pong table, why won’t you agree that’s better than your home and family!?”

likefunnysmart

Yeah, that soda don’t do a thing to compensate for 10hr/wk in traffic. Thank u, next.

Why do we care about some broke underachieving op-ed author’s opinion again?

like

No one cares about “pull request” or its author. No WFH? Not sticking around. Low six figures in an area with 4k/month rent isn’t enticing anyway

No wants to play ping pong with you at work, bro

What happens if you are a woman who can be just as effective from home, for the majority of the time, and who has an autistic child at home? Is that “privilege”? These generalized takes are silly

Do none of you know the story of the author or read the piece, the book he wrote about Silicon Valley, the issue he left Apple over, etc His name is Antonio Garcia Martinez and I just assumed most people knew the background And Apple’s campus is well beyond free soda, it’s truly a work of art…but that really is not the point. And yeah, ouch.

Gartner Thank you for the insights. I think your jumping to conclusions about me probably is aligned with your conclusions about the whole article. But again, thanks for the insights.

Such a workplace is no better than forced worship at a religious edifice. It is all power and control of the masses this BS.

Just looked up this Antonio guy who wrote the piece, absolute bozo

It's called leverage. Some people don't get it. If all Google engineers said we aren't coming back, what can Google do. They can't fire them all, that would hurt them a ton

like

Exactly. Widen the labor pool. You shouldn’t need to pay bay-area engineering rates for someone to sketch out wireframes or pull together a deck. They’re moving fast up the value chain to commoditize labor.

Why are employees being shamed instead of the trillion dollar company wasting resources on a billion dollar office lol

like

Steve Jobs built that office, he should be shamed for sure. He didn’t do anything that mattered…and he was sort of rude as well. There should have been a petition to remove him from Apple.

$2T co yet pay $100k in HCOL .. F that.. let’s raise it to $1M per lol

If the size of the company has any relevance, why isn’t the author coming down hard on employees at Walmart complaining too?

like

Right. But if the subset is rich people, size of the company is irrelevant.

The labor market is clearly dictating this. Yes it's a privilege that I'm very grateful for, but then again it's also a privilege to have me work for you 🤷‍♂️

So I had an interview last Friday for a contract to hire role that I thought went really well. So up until today there wasn’t a peep from the recruiter hiring for role, so I reached out. The recruiter then asked me how comfortable I was in a fast paced environment. I responded by telling her that after working a mix of agency and client side, yes. I honestly thought the answer was pretty self explanatory. She then pushed for more details, which I provided an example of. Red flag?
