Our black inclusion network shared bios of the newly admitted black partners at the firm. 5 are black women, and none wear their natural hair. Totally respect everyone's right to wear their hair as they choose, but feel discouraged that natural hair still doesn't seem accepted. Has anyone else noticed little/no natural hair at the PPMD level? Do you plan on flouting the status quo as your career progresses?

Personally, my hair is curly and in a tapered cut. Work has only seen my straight hair twice, I actually did all interviews with different looks and started my first day with braids, just to lay the ground work. Further, during internal team calls or weekends during busy season when dress is very relaxed, I have worn head wraps. In the few Black female Directors and partners, I generally see them switch it up just as much. I

Lol @ just to lay the ground work :D. Love it 💕! I did the same for my interviews with my current employer and was disappointed when nobody even batted an eyelash or made one comment about my hair lol. 7 years later and I still wear my hair however I please with no problems from anyone.

I’ve been thinking about this post all weekend. it occurred to me “what do we define as natural” I would say I’m natural because I don’t have chemicals in my hair even though I wear it straight more often than not. Others may define it as being able to wear braids or other textured hair regardless of it theirs or not. Others may define it as wearing your own hair unprocessed I think it’s important to define the terms. I would also say I want to see black women win Reno matter how they their hair. Just seeming people who look like me in places and spaces makes me happy. If they are empowered to wear their hair the way they want it’s bonus points.

like

Same. I also wear my hair straight mainly because it’s easy and I don’t have a lot of time (rather than me trying to fit in or perceiving it as more beautiful). Straighten it and don’t touch it for 2 weeks. I think people perceive wearing your natural curls to be easier but it’s really not. It may look “wash and wear”‘ but it definitely isn’t, at least not for me.

Just because they don’t wear their natural hair doesn’t mean that it’s not accepted. For me, I have been natural for nine years now but normally flat iron my hair simply because there’s so much maintenance required when wearing it curly. That’s difficult to do when normally traveling 90% of the time. I think that sometimes we are just as bad about judging our black sisters for how they wear their hair as our non-black colleagues.

There was 0 judgement at all in my post. I stated a fact and explicitly stated I respect their choices (cause I do). That does not preclude me from wishing I could see my own natural hair represented and respected

I'm just happy you have that many black female partners...I'll take the processed hair over none at all

like

I also see a lot of black women leaders / partners wear their natural hair day to day, but their professional pictures are not.

This is super delayed PwC2. I'm not sure. I'm in advisory and genuinely don't know if there is even a single female Black partner to be found, and if there is I feel a bit conflicted about making them bear 100% of this burden. If I'm being honest, I don't really care to tune into the assurance and tax practices. There was a webcast this week with a Black woman partner and it was just so unrelatable for me. While I have no doubt the black women who have made partners in those practices have had to overcome a lot to get there, it seems there is a very big cultural difference and advisory is really lagging

I just think older women generally don’t wear their natural hair, so it’s more of a generational thing... when I make it, I’m going to wear it however I’m feeling that month

like

Lol C1 that may be shrinkage and not a haircut 😂

Hmm I’m wondering if they wore their hair a certain way solely for their picture? It’s likely that those women switch it up on a regular basis.

This.... even my headshot has my hair laid and straight but i still natural

like

so my hair is free of chemicals but I have it blow dried and flat ironed. it’s not super straight it’s got body and bounce. I say this to say how we decide to wear our hair is deeply personal and we should give folks grace. I got a quasi faux-hawk happening which makes me happy which makes me better at my gig

like

I’ve noticed this as well, I don’t think much of it one way or the other and I wear my hair natural. Michelle Obama from what I recall never wore her hair natural while she was FLOTUS, but I saw a recent picture of her wearing what looked like natural curls.

i completely agree with this but i have locs so i’ll be damned if i get rid of them for a job. i’ve been hired already. you either love me or hate me 🤷🏾‍♀️ i’m wearing my natural hair til i leave this earth.

Exactly! I don’t ever see me not having natural hair 🤷🏽‍♀️

Be the change you want to see. I have natural hair and wear it sometimes. I also wear weaves/braids/silk presses. It depends on my mood. Hair is not a form of expression for everyone...to each their own. However, if you want to see natural hair represented, definitely rock it as you climb.

I understand your observation and agree. I personally would love to see more consistent curl diversity at the top, especially in bios and when representing their orgs. I also wish that we all really believed that being stylish and confident reads pro. Cause it does and we’re masters at it.

I think it’s based on preference, and not always on acceptance. A lot of the black partners at my firm wore their hair straight or a curly weave in their bios. On a daily basis that’s how their hair is anyway. And the black associates are the same, but more wear their hair natural. I wear my hair natural and I wanted it straight for my firm picture. But I didn’t know when the photos would be taken and I ended up having my bio pic taken with my braids still in with no time to take them out. I was worried about the braids, but then I owned it. I had my interview with braids in and got the job offer in braids, so I may as well do the same for the photo.

like

At my previous firm my pic had my natural hair, this firm my pic has it straight. I change my hair multiple times a year. Sometimes because I dont want to deal with my real hair on the road, sometimes because of what mood I'm in. Sometimes because its healthy sometimes its not. I understand this post but I personally feel like im not thinking of how im representing when I wear my hair so im sure these women aren't either.

I am wholly natural but I go straight for interviews. But once my foot is in the door and I’ve proven my work product and shining personality, this 4C hair sets up shop REAL quick!

It could be that they don’t want to put thought into changing their hair when their current style is second nature. I know a lot of really successful bw and the vast majority are not fussy with their hair.

I notice a healthy mix of curly hair and straight hair! I also have seen black women with colored hair like blonde or with highlights in their hair. To me it’s about how you wear it. When I have my natural hair out, I just make sure it’s neat - although some days my hair is just going to do what it wants to do ha. Personally I wear my hair (outside of protective styles) in an Afro state or a fresh twist out!
