Our firm is encouraging us to put our gender pronouns in our email sigs as a way to strengthen our allyship to transgender and non-binary folks. For those LGBTQ+ folks, do you consider people who don’t make this indication in their email sigs a sign of not supporting this effort?

I don’t consider absence of pronouns in a sig to be a negative, I just consider the presence of them to be a plus! If this is a firm-wide format standardization and someone is pushing back, that feels a bit more odd, but there are also plenty of reasons someone might not want to share pronouns and still be an ally (eg what if they actually identify as trans or nb aren’t ready to come out, as is the case of one of my best friends in a male-dominated industry) As long as someone’s respectful of why pronouns are important, that’s all that matters - included in sig or not :)

I’m all for D&I, I don’t mind using someone’s preferred pronouns, I’m just feeling over saturated with initiatives from all ends. I hope me choosing to not change my signatures isn’t perceived as a sign of opposition.

No, let’s keep our email signatures clean and simple so our phone email views don’t get any busier. But in all seriousness, OP — no one will ever think that you are AGAINST supporting LGBTQ+ when you don’t explicitly state your gender pronoun.

like

A1, I promise you, plenty of people will decide that you’re against supporting LGBTQ+ if you explicitly choose to not have your pronoun in your email signature. (I’m not of that school of thought but I can already tell that people think that way).

No. There are enough other things going on in the world. But- if you’re looking for ways to be an ally (for a family member or co worker who is part of the alphabet mafia) this is literally the least you can do.

I am trans (mtf) and not yet out, or ready to be out. Statistically, there are many like me. I know it’s well meant, but forcing the issue of pronouns places folks like me in an awful bind. Write he/his, I’m being disingenuous. Write she / her? I’m not ready for that. 👩🏻🏳️‍⚧️🙅🏻‍♀️

TLDR: No, because it's probably not about you. If I were to put myself in the shoes of an individual who gets called the wrong pronoun daily, I imagine correcting someone can be uncomfortable and in times even confrontational. Then add the fears associated with it in the workplace...How do you be authentically yourself if you're not sure how? I see this as a sign of support from the company, it is opening the door for those who may be questioning or struggling to take the step to be authentically themselves. Additionally, keep in mind that representation matters. It's allowing for visible representation.

I view non-trans people who give their gender pronouns as goofy and simply trying to signal their status as virtuous with progressive cultural hegemony.

Absolutely! Omg the number of times I have to point out that so-and-so is male or female because the name sounds ambiguous to sheltered ears! 👩🏻🏳️‍⚧️

I don’t question when people don’t do it, but as others have said, I question the push back. It’s a very simple and polite gesture, but it also extends beyond just making LGBTQ people feel included. I have a unisex name and it helps clients and internal team members understand how to address me when they first meet me - especially if they’re from international offices / locations where my name isn’t common. I think the idea of including pronouns in your signature is such an easy and fairly logical thing to do, but it’s unfortunately been turned into a very political issue because writing “he / him” in one’s auto filled email signature is apparently too much effort to make for people who don’t think twice about their identity.

I made the change recently but I don't love it and a few people have confided in me that they don't either. One is half-in the closet about their gender identity and only a select few people in the company know, the other is cis female and has said she has been treated better by clients switching from her full first name to her androgynous shortened name (think Sam). Being cis myself I don't have a lot of perspective on how trans and enbies feel about it, but to me it feels like we're calling out their "otherness" explicitly.

Adding onto this for clarity: Ultimately, if it helps make people more comfortable and avoid confusion, I'm for it.

Following.

Yes

I’m gay and I don’t look at that at all. Maybe that’s because I am not American. I understand that usage if people have a unisex name and don’t want to be mistaken for a man when they are a woman or vice versa.

Nop, but it’s included in the LGBTQ, which I think was the targeted public by OP in his initial question
